FIBA World Cup Preview – Group C

We’re going group by group with what you need to know to enjoy the 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball. Today we’re looking at Group C.

The teams
Dominican Republic
Qualified: Fourth place at 2013 FIBA Americas, they return to the World Cup for the first time since 1978.

Finland
Qualified: ANGRY BIRDS. Ok not entirely but Rovio played a big role in helping the Finns secure the wild card for their first World Cup appearance.

New Zealand
Qualified: Second at 2013 FIBA Oceania championships. In Oceania, second is also known as ‘not Australia’ as it was once again a two-team tournament with both certain of their place in Spain.

Ukraine
Qualified: Finished 6th at EuroBasket 2013 with borscht-loving Pooh Jeter at point guard. This is their first appearance at the World Cup.

United States
Qualified: Gold medal winners at the 2012 summer Olympics. No Durant, no Love, no question the defending champions are still loaded.

Turkey
Qualified: Another wildcard, albeit not with the colourful background of Finland securing the same status. Turkey hosted the last World Cup where they took the silver medal.

CSKA Moscow’s Kyle Hines and Sonny Weems take the ice bucket challenge

Admittedly this site is in slight danger of turning into ALS Ice Buckets in Europe but seeing as this is the first Euroleague connection to the challenge we’ve seen, we’ll allow it. Check out CSKA Moscow’s Kyle Hines and Sonny Weems taking the ALS ice bucket challenge.

EuroBasket 2015: Wins for Macedonia, Belgium, and Georgia

It was a day of upsets in EuroBasket 2015′s second qualifying round. A few groups that looked like processions got turned upside down.

In case you need a re-cap on what the teams involved need to do to qualify, the seven group winners progress to EuroBasket 2015 along with the top six second-placed teams from the seven qualifying groups.

Mirza Teletovic had another big day for Bosnia and Herzegovina, scoring 29 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in a 72-62 victory in Group A. That win keeps Bosnia on top at 2-0.

There was an offensive feast in Sofia but a bad day for the home team as Bulgaria fell 100-84 to Israel in Group B. The Netherlands pulled off a big upset 65-60 at Montenegro, with 18 points from Roeland Schaftenaar. That leaves the Netherlands, Montenegro, and Israel on 2-1.

Q&A with Alex Krstanovic on the Belgrade Trophy

rasko-katic-serbia
The 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball warm-up games continued apace at the weekend. Serbia, Argentina, Turkey, and Puerto Rico all played in the Belgrade Trophy. We asked Alex Krstanovic, chief editor of Sportska Centrala, for his thoughts on the four teams involved.

BallinEurope:Serbia were hosting, how did they look over the two days?
Alex Krstanovic: Serbia looked quite good, but it was obvious we lack a real playmaker (such as Teodosic) and another good shooter such as Nedovic. My personal question is whether the Serbian team has peaked a bit too early in its physical form. It was obvious in today’s game that the players held the rhythm for all of 40 minutes, which is usually not the case in preparation games and 2 weeks before the tournament even starts.

Thomas Klepeisz shows you how to celebrate a winning bucket

Technically it wasn’t a buzzer beater. Practically, who cares? Austria pulled off a big upset win over Poland tonight in the EuroBasket 2015 qualifers. Considering Austria hadn’t exactly impressed to date in qualification, this is a huge result as they are now tied with Poland and Germany at 2-1 in Group C.

Two-time Euroleague winning coach close to Wakayama deal

The Japan Times has reported that Zeljko Pavlicevic is in discussions with Wakayama Trians ownership to return to lead the team for the 2014-15 season.

Pavlicevic, who led KK Split to two of their three straight Euroleague titles at the start of the 1990s. Pavlicevic, 63. has spent a large chunk of the latter part of his career in Japan, coaching the national team through the 2006 FIBA World Championships and led Wakayama to a second-placed finish in the NBL last year, having spent three seasons prior to that with the bj-league’s Shimane Susanoo Magic, before parting ways at the end of the season. The cash-strapped club, still without a coach, now looks set to be re-signed to Wakayama.

This is how LeBron does the ice bucket challenge

LeBron James may not be suiting up for Team USA at the 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball but that didn’t stop him from accepting the ALS ice bucket challenge from the American team. Of course, being the King, he had to do it in style.
