Partizan defeats Olimpija, 77-74, for fifth straight NLB title in mysteriously under-covered game

Congratulations go out from BallinEurope this morning to Partizan Belgrade, whose dynasty (or, as the NLB official site would have it, “dominancy”) in Adriatic League basketball rolled on last night when the Black-and-Whites won their fifth consecutive championship.

So let’s go right to the official writeup on the game:

(AdriaticBasket) – Partizan is the 10th NLB League champion! In a thrilling final, played in Ljubljana, Slovenia on Thursday, the team from Belgrade defeated Union Olimpija and won its fifth consecutive trophy in the regional league 77:74…

Really, that’s it. At least it was as of 7.30am CET.

And while one YouTube is typically worth a few thousand words, that site too is sadly bereft of stuff on the game. The boxscore implies that sixth man Curtis Jerrells was the hero for Partizan, with a huge 20 points in 29 minutes. For Olimpija, four players scored in double figures – including Samo Udrih off the bench – and Goran Jagodnik contributed a 12-point, seven-rebound effort before fouling out.

While BiE is well-known as a stat monkey, even yours truly admits that the numbers are inadequate here. What’s up with the lack of coverage, NLB folks…?

But hey, here’s a picture of some Partizan fans at the game…

Top 100 teams in Europe: The Return

After a few weeks off, BallinEurope finally returns the Top 100 list for your perusal this week. With Euroleague ball on a break, not much has changed near the top of the table, though Olympiacos’ dominance in EΣAKE ball has again leapfrogged them over Real Madrid for the no. 2 spot on the BiE table as the defending Euroleague champion holds on as top dog.

Since FIBA has awarded Great Britain an automatic qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games, BiE won’t be symbolically awarding the no. 100 spot to the top team in the British Basketball League; so congratulations to BC Oostende in this edition. Without further ado, the following are the current rankings based on play in all leagues to date.

A week in highlights: Spanish block party, mighty Milos, Utah rap and some dude dunking in L.A.

Yes, readers, it’s Sunday. Or, as BallinEurope likes to think of it, “YouTube Trawlday.” (As though BiE avoids the ‘Tube on the other six days. Yeah, surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre.)

Whatever you want to call it, start your day with these 10 video clips starring Nando De Colo, Mirza Begic, Mehmet Okur, Milos Teodosic, Ibrahim Jaaber, Bojan Bogdanović and, you know, what’s his name from the Los Angeles Clippers. Enjoy!

February Madness in Croatia: Zadar uses no subs, wins on buzzer beater, causes coach’s resignation

Talk about your February Madness. In the Krešimir Ćosić Cup, a.k.a. the Croatian Cup, semifinals last night, unheralded KK Zadar (10-19 overall in 2010-11) stunned Eurocup Top 16 team Cedevita Zagreb (16-13), 83-82, on the favorites’ home court.

What’s that you say? Not so crazy? Upsets happen all the time? Okay, consider that KK Zadar fielded five players *for the entire 40 minutes.* That’s right, no substitutions were made.

Starting to get bizarre? Okay, now factor in that, of those five Zadar players, four were younger than 23 years old.

The icing on the straitjacket? Cedevita head coach Aleksandar Petrovic apparently reacted in the only way he saw fit, i.e. to resign his position in embarrassment, effective immediately.

But please, enjoy a little of the madness for yourself below the break, with Marko Car, Paul Marčinković, Sime Olivari, Mario Dundovic and an unlikely hero in buzzer-beating 19-year-old Ivan Batur. Happy February, Europe!

Top 100 Teams in Europe: Pre-Cups Running Over Edition

As most European domestic leagues are taking a break for a week or two for national cup and/or all-star festivities, BallinEurope crunches the numbers again to determine where the Continent’s finest stand.

Near the top, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Euroleague-side punishment of Union Olimpija shook things up a bit within the top 10 and Olympiacos reasserted its (possibly temporary) superiority over their Green rivals to swap spots in the top five.

Read on to read up on the most dominant team in Europe (they’re down there at no. 71), the worst week, the weirdest week, the re-entry of a couple old favorites on the chart and some good video embeds. As always, in a show of solidarity with those who would Back British Basketball, the current top team in Great Britain holds the number 100 spot on the list. (Sorry, Maccabi Haifa fans…)

BallinEurope’s completely relativistic 2010-11 All-Star Team (or, What? You’ve never heard of Bambale Osby?)

Massie: Massive en France

With most domestic basketball hitting a halfway point and the Euroleague into its second round, BallinEurope today pays tribute to some outstanding individual performances by naming its all-star team.

No relative merits or penalties were assessed for the league in which BiE’s all-stars compete, and domination in one league was a top criteria for making the team. Currently, just four players lead a major European domestic or regional league in two of the big three statistical categories (i.e. points, rebounds and assists) and all are represented with the below-listed magnificent seven.

These guys may not yet exactly be household names, but BiE’d go into battle with this quintet any day – especially right now when they’re hot.

Top 100 Teams in Europe: Barcelona back to no. 1

BallinEurope took a little extra time with the Top 100 Teams in Europe list this week after a suggestion that certain ACB teams were getting the shaft of non-inclusion in the calculations – and so the pool has been widened accordingly.

In calculating the Top 100 for this week and heretofore, all teams in major domestic leagues with at least 10 wins will be included. With the addition of the new teams, some 165 sides are in the running for a ranking on this prestigious list and the very top is dominated by Spain: ACB sides bag five spots in the top 15 and twelve within the first 40.

NLB wrap: Zagreb bests Radnicki, Buducnost upsets Partizan, CEZ Nymburg no. 1

The first week of play in the Adriatic League (a.k.a. the NLB Liga ABA) was capped yesterday with KK Zagreb’s 82-76 home-opener win over Radnički despite an amazing performance by Michael Lee – and just check out who’s atop the standings.

Lee, a two-sport star at St. Bonaventure who was with the Hungarian league’s Albacomp for 2009-10, played all 40 minutes and contributed 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including a lights-out 100% on his five three-point attempts.
