Just in case you were wondering, there will in fact be a 2011 Greek Cup awarded after all. Those two monster clubs, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, will meet on Sunday to award the prize after months of delay and some strange behind-the-scenes decision-making. The event arrives at quite an interesting time for the teams, as both are set to tipoff their semifinal playoff series on Wednesday. Panathinaikos hasn’t been on the court since last Sunday’s Euroleague championship win over Maccabi Tel Aviv, while one can imagine Olympiacos’ greatest challenge to keep up their 28-game winning streak this season may be Father Time himself: The Reds haven’t played a game since vanquishing Kolossos Rhodes on May 4.
Some Greece-based American players appear to be going a bit stir crazy in waiting for the EΣAKE season to conclude. Upon hearing of the schedule for the second round, former NBAer/Asseco Prokom PG Bobby Brown, currently with an Aris Thessaloniki side which hasn’t played since May 7, tweeted that on Monday that he’d “Juss woke up to some bad news that pissed me off…The Greek League in Greece is the dumbest League ever.”
Think Brown’ll be back to the “Greek League in Greece” for next season? Yeah, probably not.
