It was just a question of time before it becomes official. Now it is. Pini Gershon will leave Olympiacos with immediate effect. We talked already about the problems he got but here is a bit more on his failure.
Gershon joined Olympiacos in 2006 after some successful years with Maccabi Tel Aviv. The goal was to build a whole new team just around his own philosophy. So we players like Henry Domercantg, Andrija Zizic or Ryan Stack with the Reds. And of course, there was still Gershon’s “favorite” Big Sofo. The team’s success was mediocre, as they reached the finals in Greece and that was about it.
So everything changed and we some kind of mini-NBA in the Peace and Friendship Stadium with Lynn Greer, Qyntel Woods or Marc Jackson. And who does not remember the Chris Weber or Schortsanitis episodes? The team played some miserable basketball for their budget and qualified only for the Euroleague Top16 with a 5th place.
Of course, Greece is known for having big pressure on their coaches, and now Gershon, who is described as Istrionic (???), charismatic, simply unstoppable by Euroleague TV, is paying for the poor play and the unexpected losses and will very probably be replaced by Pangiotis Giannakis. This failure with Olympiacos is also understandable when you see the chaos of a Gershon time out.
