Creativity still wins dunk contests

October 2, 2007 by Julien

If you don’t believe me, check out that video report of the Spanish Slam Dunk Contest. The final showdown was former Clipper power forward James Singleton versus Spanish NBA prospect Victor Claver.

As you can see, Singleton had dynamite in his biceps. He must have Darryl Dawkins blood in his veins or something. But actually that was probably Singleton’s worst weekend of his entire life. I’m not talking about being second in a slam dunk contest. Eurobasket.com reports the big man might miss up to 7 months because of a bad knee injury he suffered the day after, playing the Supercopa final. Hence, reading down the medical report, I thought I was watching Grey’s Anatomy… (sprained knee, ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments, partially ruptured lateral collateral ligament…)

Well, ok, now it’s hard to make the transition to the funny part of the post. So forget about Singleton’s injury and tell me you didn’t laugh watching Claver put on his cow-boy hat after his dunk. It was creative, amusing and graceful. I mean, not Walter Herrmann graceful but the kid showed potential… Anyway, I think we’ll hear more from Claver this year. This guy is gonna be a first-round pick in a year or two.
