Sarunas Jasikevicius, more popular than Jesus Christ ?

September 28, 2007

Euroleague legend Sarunas Jasikevicius landed in Athens this afternoon. And apparently Panathinaikos officials told a few friends about the news. For a couple of hours, Jasikevicius must have thought he was the Pope, Beyonce Knowles or Nelson Mandela. Did Celtics fans go to the streets like that for Kevin Garnett ?

Panathinaikos fans definitely know how to throw a welcome party. Now I don’t want to fuel the rivalry but it sounds like they can compete with Olympiakos fans ? Don’t you think ?

Who are these Pope and Mandela dudes? Euroleague or NBA players? Is Panathinaikos after them too?

trying to be as objective as i can, 1000 people for Saras were TOO few after all that has happened during the summer.
we (Olympiakos fans) have done this like 10 times in bigger numbers in the past so no, no competition here.
We’ll have a chance for an immediate comparison if Webber says yes ;)…

now you know what is actually a big deal? 60000 people welcoming someone, even though he was a football player.

Regarding Sarunas and your article on his visit back home, although you didn’t want to put too much emphasis on it, it may be hard to compare fan enthusiasm between the euro fan and the Americans. Two different cultures. The euro fan base across the board act sort of like out of control American college fans of football. That’s not a negative comment, but a good comparison. With Americans, it’s like a been there-done that type of thing. However, I really do love to see the international enthusiasm for its athletes. They have a purer appreciation for many more sports than just basketball, baseball, and football. Internationally, they trully appreciate other sports such as track and field, soccer, rugby, etc. Gotta love that. More so, I think their enthusiasm is born out of a deep patriotic feel for their countrymen and town of residency. I’d love to see that enthusiasm for our athletes, but through mere exposure, I can see where that’ll get old over time.

Back in 1996 when Dominique Wilkins arrived to play for Panathinaikos, much more fans were waiting for him at the airport..
Saras is not a messiah (as he would be in Olympiacos), he is just a great player in the Euroleague Champions..
