Who wants a Spanish wife ?

October 2, 2007 by Julien

This is not a message to the many Penelope Cruz fans. Spanish sports newspaper Marca revealed today what could be one of the biggest scandals in the history of Spanish basketball. The growing number of marriages between foreign basketball players and Spanish young women raised some eyebrows. Today a Spanish “actress” told the press she had married American big man Will McDonald only to help him be considered a Spanish by the Spanish federation standards. As you probably know, the number of non-European players is limited almost everywhere in Europe.

“I don’t remember where we got married. [...] But I don’t think I did anything wrong. I just helped a friend.”

Some rumors go further, saying the “actress” would get 2,500 euros every month to pretend being Miss McDonald.

But it seems like this marriage of convenience is no isolated case. Serbian sharpshooter Predrag Savovic’s name has been dropped. And according to Marca, there are many more to come. And it sounds more and more interesting.

“In October 3. edition, Marca will reveal the case of a player who got married to a woman who is almost twice his age…”

You can’t wait for tomorrow either, right ?

[...] Life was quiet for Stanko Barac until this summer. At least quiet for a skilled 2.17m center. But a very successful 2k7 campaign with Bosnian champs Siroki Prima changed it all. He was soon drafted by the Heat with their 39th pick then traded to Indiana for a future second-round pick. A few months later, Basque Country powerhouse Tau Vitoria inked him for the next 5 years but rumors said he would soon be loaned. The Bosnian native was then called up by Croatian NT head coach Jasmin Repesa for the European Championships. He made the cut and played a bigger role as time went by. After his good outings with Croatia, some thought Stanko might remain in Vitoria, especially after James Singleton blew up his knee. But then again Vitoria signed Linton Johnson and Will McDonald admitted his marriage and his Spanish passport were a joke. [...]
