Watch out Pini Gershon!

January 31, 2008

I just finished watching the re-run of Olympiakos vs. Siena. I mean it was an exciting game right? A solid Marc Jackson with 23 points, 9 rebounds and even 5 assists. But it was Terrell McIntyre who spoiled Marc Jackson’s performance.

Everybody who watched the game saw his 3/3 three pointers in the last 3 minutes or so that gave Siena the deciding push to win this close game. I mean both teams are already qualified, fighting for a better spot won’t help since the groups will be mixed on Monday anyway. In the end Shaun “Krusty” Stonerook’s three buried all the hopes for Olympiakos to win the game.

But did anybody see Pini Gershon leaving the arena after shaking the referees and coaches hands? Two guards covering him and objects flying in his direction, even hitting him?

I might need some Greek person or even Olympiakos fan to explain this to me. I really don’t understand that at all. Even if I would be an insider and people tell me, hey, they don’t like what he did so far and Panathinaikos right now has the better record - I still would think: But hey - you are in the next round and Siena is a pretty good team this year.

So any kind of explanation is welcome.

I am Greek, but I dont support oly (or any other team actually) … My explanation is that oly fans dislike gerson since mid-season last year. Its various reasons, the (apparent) mis-handling of sofo, the fact that the team spent an awful lot of money (3rd most expensive roster) but is only struggling in the euroleague (and just basically lost its chances of home advantage in the greek playoffs with an away lost game to paok) - oly fans attribute the clear problems in their team to gershon, greek forums are full of people cursing him and asking their management to sack him.

They dont agree with some signings and the way these players are being given total freedom that ends up in anarchic play (like greer for example - even jackson is blamed for lack of defense and the fact opposing centers always score big against him).

It all comes down to oly vs pao hatred, after aggelopoulos bros took over olympiakos and spent so much money, they expected to challenge pao in equal grounds, something which is clearly not happening.

In greece, we (wrongfully if you ask me) are very quick to blame coaches, have very high expectations and consider coaches and players to be gods one second (after beating cska for example) and doomed another, after a bad loss.

But in gershons case, it is true that he has been given time …

Now, I dont know what will happen, but fans clearly want him out, they believe that he ’s the main factor to blame and without him the team will see better days.
