[...] In writing about the proposed homegrown rule almost exactly one year ago here at BallinEurope, Christophe was also generally optimistic, but still managed to find some chinks in the armor. Since yours truly cannot really embellish upon what Christophe has written, BiE encourages you to read up on the issue in “Will the HGP change basketball?” from 2009 and this week’s piece entitled “Installation of homegrown player status in France.” [...]

Nice article, but ...Russian rules require at least TWO, not one domestic player to be on the court at every moment.

I think the Bundesliga is in a very unique situation now considering the choices they have made regarding U.S. imports and the future development of their league.

From one point of view, you always want to leave space on team rosters to show appreciate and pay homage to local country talent. Local fans become more engaged and proud of their teams, supporting their local countrymen.

Conversely, the catalyst for the growth and rise in attendance has been the arrival and prominence of U.S. players. I have commented on a different post of how the Bundesliga has become the perfect transition league, both personally and professionally, for American players. Playing in Germany is a safe bet for Americans - league is competitive, is filled with other American players to ease transition, and is a great proving ground for promotion into top level leagues.

The Bundesliga has employed an interesting strategy attracting U.S. players that will pay dividends for the future growth of their league. The league, however, must keep a close eye on the German fan to ensure they continue to support local teams dominated by Americans.

"In Germany, where the rules are even more open for US imports, the club had created a road map that foresaw the raise of the local quota to four players for the next season, but a decision returning the status quo has recently been made"

As far as I know, the quota will still increase to four next season. When German Basketball Federation and the league signed their new agreement they only made clear that there will be no further increase (e.g. to 5/7, 6/6) in the future.

It might very well be that I'm totally wrong here, but the issue is discussed very controversively on the german boards and your blog entry is the first time I read about this development.
