All over the internet has the rumor spread that Ben Gordon has been offered €5.5 million Euros to join a team that already looks like they can win the Euroleague. As always, CSKA is denying this. It is also said that Ben Gordon would take an European offer of at least €7 million.
First off, what passport does or could Ben hold? This might be crucial to find out if his paycheck can actually reach €7 million per season. Remember, there are restrictions in the Euroleague and in each European domestic league regarding how many Americans can be on the team and even on the floor.
Ben’s parents are Jamaican and he was born in London, but is an American basketball player, according to Wikipedia. After all, Ben is holding a UK passport.
If I’m Ben Gordon, I’m just looking at Josh Childress and his contract. Josh averaged 7.1 points and 5.7 rebounds, while Ben scored 18.6 points, grabbed 3.1 rebounds and had 3 assists per game. According to the statistics, I might pick Ben over Josh – having in the back of my mind, of course, the kind of players Josh and Ben are.
Looking at the numbers, it is said that Josh is making about $20 million over three years – $6.6 million a year or about €4.6 million presently. Remember: Ben was offered €5 million and wants €7 million. If you ask me, CSKA, give him the six he really wants and score a great player.
According to the stats, Ben is the bigger deal; in terms of money, he also should be a bigger deal; and within the NBA vs. Euroleague battle, he should be a even bigger deal, right?

I understand that Gordon is a scorer, a relenteless shooter with no fear… however I can’t look past the intangibles of a guy like Josh Childress… realistically, he can play the 2 or 3, maybe the 4 against some euro teams, he can play the role of lock down defender while still having enough offensive game to not be a liability. In fact, if I recall correctly, he was near the top of the list in field goal percentage last year, proving his offensive efficiency. I realize Ben could be the leading scorer on a team, but I don’t think scoring is a problem in the euroleague. A player like Childress seems like a bigger asset to me.

If I’m not mistaken, according to the article Gordon got offered 5.500.000$ for next season by CSKA. The Bulls offer is about 6.400.000$/year. However, the CSKA offer is – as always in Europe – after taxes, the Bulls offer is before taxes. Gordon wants 7.000.000$ from CSKA, which is close to what Childress is getting in Piraeus.

probably a bigger deal on paper, but I think CSKA is strong at that position and it wouldn’t really improve them that much to add another fantastic scorer (even if he was the best) when they already have them a-plenty.
Cska should look for other positions, and Josh fits Olympiacos better than Ben does CSKA. That said, I believe Ben is probably the better player, but not a perfect choice for the specific team, so I like the deal less than Josh’s.
Plus, Ben has a good, young and improving team to play for in the states and has a role there, unlike Josh who left one of the shakier franchises for a powerhouse.
Aside from that I am sorry to say that the numbers are wrong…these are the numbers from the playoffs for Josh, he was better during last regular season and his whole NBA career.
And since the playoffs were fairly short for the hawks these numbers represent a very small sample.
A CSKA official denied all the rumors. He even said that Gordon was never a player would have wanted or wished.
