Euroleague 2007-2008 - Unicaja Malaga - The Preview

Overall Record Prediction : 9-5

So, here comes Europe’s 3rd team! After last year’s big success of Sergio
Scariolo & his boys, Unicaja Málaga will start the 2007/08 Euroleague
season as one of those “second line” teams with possibilities of reaching the
Final Four in Madrid. Although it seems that the team has improved, only a
few people trust in repeating the great performance of last season… but
why? that’s the question.

The team has lost two historical players, ‘Pepe’ Sánchez and Marcus Brown.
They have been replaced by a Serbian-Croatian couple, Bojan Popovic and
Davor Kus. However, the real power of Unicaja this season will come from a
really powerful paint game, one of the best of European basketball : with a
new big star arriving (Marcus Haislip), two very-big men in ‘5’ position
(Daniel Santiago & Boniface Ndong), and the return of former Unicaja’s PF
Germán Gabriel, it’s sure that fans in Malaga will enjoy spectacular
dunks, alley-oops and great battles in the paint.

However, there’s still doubts about the outside game. Popovic will have to
work hard to replace ‘Pepe’ Sánchez, and Davor Kus is going to play in
his new role as a shooting guard. There’s not a clear offensive reference
in ‘2’ and ‘3’ positions… but Jiri Welsch. This year HAS to be the time
of his explosion as player in Europe, Unicaja will really need him
especially to score in the decisive moments of key games. Carlos Jiménez returns
to the ‘3’ spot and with Carlos Cabezas & Berni Rodríguez (the world
champions trio) will be the soul of a team that surely will improve along
the season.

Unicaja only has to solve one thing to get the success: they used to be
invincible at home in Pabellón José María Martín Carpena, but their
performances as guests have been really bad in the start of this season… and
if they want to be one of the best, they will have to overcome many
difficult games all across Europe…
Final 4 Predictions : Panathinaikos, CSKA, Unicaja and Maccabi Tel Aviv

Winner : CSKA
