Goran Dragic will go to Phoenix

August 13, 2008 by Christophe

After everything looked clear for European Basketball fans that Goran Dragic will play for TAU Vitoria next season, now the US site sportingnews.com announces that the Slovenian PG will join Phoenix as back-up PG for next season.

After all the discussions about Dragic’s transfer from his hometeam of Geoplin Slovan to TAU Ceramica, it looked like both parties had found an agreement last week. TAU Ceramica would pay a buy-out to Slovan and Dragic would add some personal money to make the deal happen. So he declared on Monday that he is happy to come to Spain and play a significant role for the Basques.

But now, the following article came through my newsreader. Sportingnews announces that the Suns sign Goran Dragic to back up Nash.

A source confirmed to Sporting News that Slovenian point guard Goran Dragic — whose rights were acquired in June in a draft-night trade with the Spurs — will sign a multi-year contract of at least three years and will play in Phoenix next year.

There are still some administrative details to resolve, but this is a big win for the Suns. Dragic did not have a buyout in his contract with Tau Ceramica in Spain, and it was widely believed that he would have to wait till next year to join an NBA team.

Now I don’t know how official this really is as it looks like the source of the information is somebody of Dragic’s agent entourage as Rade Filipovic (his agent) is also quoted in the article. We will see how this case evolves but the latest development is now that Dragic will move to the NBA.

The article says: “Complicating matters is that Dragic’s rights were technically owned by Union Olimpija in his hometown of Ljubljana, and he was on loan to Tau.”

Well, that´s precisely the opposite: TAU had the rights, but was on loan to Olimpija… If not… he was on loan to TAU…. but played with Olimpija?

Also when they refer to his will to stay in Spain: “but according to the source, the paper was actually using old quotes. “… Well, actually it was Dragic’s own words in the start of team’s preseason…
