Co-host David Hein and BallinEurope’s Os Davis have a good one for the NBA fans out there, particularly those backing the Indiana Pacers. Joining us as guest on the show is new Pacers director of international scouting Pete Philo. Philo brings an impressive resume to the club which not only includes a nice stint with the Minnesota Timberwolves as a talent scout, but also an executive position with China’s national program and status as cofounder of the Eurocamp youth program in the 1990s.
In an extensive interview with “Taking the Charge,” Philo touches upon a myriad of subjects including (among many others) his own playing days in Croatia and Iceland; the Luis Scola acquisition; the relatively dramatic shakeup in the Pacers’ front office this summer; spots to catch up-and-comers in Europe; and meeting basketball legends on two continents.
Of course, we talking heads couldn’t resist throwing in our two cents on Euroleague week two action (even if it was a rather dull slate of results this time out) and unleash Official Fearless Predictions™ for week three. Plus, Hein is indulgent enough to go over BallinEurope’s Top 10 European-centric storylines for the upcoming NBA season as well. (Ah, finally, *finally*, both big hoops leagues are on!)
And whoa, is our film of the week notable as well. In honor of the start of the NBA season (that’s Os’ justification, anyway), we review the legendarily bad Kazaam starring legendary badass Shaquille O’Neal. It’s a “family” movie about … ah, to hell with it. Watch the brilliant opening scene of “Scary Movie 4” instead; it’s shorter, pithier and manages at least four more laughs than the entirety of Shaq’s full-length star turn.
