Being French sucks

October 7, 2007 by Julien

And it comes from a Frenchman ! Guys, I’m tired of being a basketball fan here in France. Both national teams (men and women) started the European Championships with sky-high expectations. Both teams had finished 5th of the 2006 World Championships sooooo without Team USA and Argentina (men) or Team USA, Australia and Brazil (women), a medal seemed up for grab.

The men squad had the reigning NBA Finals MVP, the 2006 MIP plus a couple of other NBA players. They were so loaded the national head coach decided to do without 3 NBA players. The women squad had some of the best players in Europe, type of ones who play in Russia with the Sue Birds and the Diana Taurasis. They even had Sandrine Gruda who was drafted by Connecticut this summer and was elected today Best Rising Star of the 2007 European Championships.

That said, I’m sure you’ll understand why I feel depressed after both teams finished E.I.G.H.T.H. of the European Championships. I was slowly recovering from the men’s terrible tournament when the girls started losing 3 games in a row over the weekend and made history repeat…

Now the girls’ head coach said today he would resign. And the guys’ head coach will probably be sacked by the French Federation in the upcoming days. Oh and Tony Parker won’t play for France until 2009 because Gregg Popovich said no. And, and, well, forget it. I will turn into a rugby fan. That’s the only sport – it seems – where we can go through the quarter finals this year…
