Are 0.2 seconds enough for a catch-and-shoot?

December 5, 2007

After the records night yesterday in the ULEB Cup we talked already about, Belgian newspapers revealed today that the win of Crvena Zvedza in Oostende may have a juridical overtime.

In fact, BC Telindus Ostende will make an official protest against the loss last night after a last second shot by Tadija Dragicevic that sealed the game. The Serbian forward received the ball after a break when there were only 0.2 seconds to play and made a three point shot that went in.

According to the Belgian website levif.be, Oostende thinks that it is "humanly impossible to receive a pass, to have the feet on the ground and to shot at the basket in just 0.2 seconds". Only a tip-in would have been possible to execute in such a short time was the next argument they wrote down in their official protest report.

According to the video images, the exact time that Dragicevic took to make this play was 0.6 seconds. These counting of course is unofficial but the management from the Belgian team hopes that their arguments will be received by the ULEB and that the game will be decided in their favor.

We had already such close situations in European basketball and there has never been a protest on such events that has been taken into account. I just want to mention the 0.3 second shot by the Lithuanian Mindaugas Timinskas or the famous alley-oop buzzer beater by Rudy Fernandez in the Euroleague.

Fisher’s shot was also in like 0.4 seconds to go. 🙂

the buzzer went before the shot was released so the shot should have been waived. why that didn’t happen I don’t know.
