Monday's cigarettes

November 10, 2008

Here we go for another week of action. Already? What happened the last seven days? Here’s the roundup of the most interesting stories from last week.

  • Watch the top 10 plays from the Lithuanian league. Don’t get frustrated by the music and wait until No. 2, which is really worth it.
  • The Deutsche Bank Skyliners released their assistant coach. Well, you may think that this is a normal story not worth mentioning. But you should know that the assistant coach is named Daphné Bouzikou and that she is the only female professional coach in men’s basketball in Europe. The important part of the story is the following, though: Bouzikou was fired after being a member of the coaching staff since the team’s formation nine years ago. And the release has been with immediate effect but without official reason given by the team. Bouzikou told the press through her legal representative that the Deutsche Bank Skyliners hired a new assistant coach this summer who, according to Bouzikou, earns “considerably more” than she does. So Bouzikou was talking to her legal counselor to draft a letter of protest against this practice, as it was not in line with the law on equal treatment of men and women. However, Frankfurt published a press release saying that this protest was not the reason for Bouzikou’s release. The team’s lawyer told the media that Bouzikou did things that “may have penal relevance” to the team.
  • Kalise Gran Canaria takes over the top of the ACB after a spectacular win over Unicaja Malaga at home. And we had once again two British players (Joel Freeland and Robert Archibald) on the court. It really looks like London 2012 is motivating them.
  • ESPN visited Josh Childress in Greece and has some nice video footage of the interview. Additionally, they interviewed Olympiacos owner Panagiotis Angelopoulos about his future plans.
  • Fred Weis, the guy who once tried to take a charge on Vince Carter, became the all-time leading shot blocker of the Spanish ACB this weekend.
  • Serbian forward Nikola Dragovic, who currently plays at UCLA in the NCAA, was arrested on suspicion of pushing his former live-in girlfriend to the ground during a dispute. What’s more interesting, though, is that he was released after posting $20,000 bail. Where did that money come from?
  • Euroleague TV portrays Brandon Jennings, born to be a star.
  • When Yarone talked about the magic of the Pionir Arena in Belgrade, this is what it is all about. Calling it “NBA Playoff atmosphere” may be a slight understatement.
  • Yet another release in Germany. Marcus Slaughter was fired by Eisbären Bremerhaven, according to rumors in the press. No official statement has been published, but according to the Nrodseezeitung, Slaughter ate “Currywurst mit Pommes” 40 minutes before the last game. If that’s not a reason to cut your top scorer…

You really must. But better not on a regular basis (unless, of course, you’re already married).

Let’s put the german haute cuisine aside for a second, there are also rumours that Slaughter is isolated in the team, failed to integrate and not to get along with coach Sakalauskas and his teammates.

    Why? Because he smelled curry?

The Slaughter issue remains unclear as there’s no official confirmation, yet. The club only confirmed that “Slaughter did not travel with the team to the road game in Cologne”.

In the US you typically only have to pay 10% of the bail. $2,000 is a little more possible to come up with instead of $20,000

Good job, but the Skurdauskas-Donatas duo is really opening some eyes over there 🙂
