Real Madrid woes: EL Final Four whitewash of Whites sparks rumors of change

May 9, 2011

Just one day after getting outmuscled in two Euroleague Final Four games, Real Madrid is looking to next season and figuring to make sweeping changes – are the Whites due for yet another offseason of roster regeneration?

Following Real’s 82-63 loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv, former Madrid legend/current staffer Alberto Herreros stated that the current roster lacked the strength to compete with the Sofoklis Schortsanitises of European ball and that the Whites’ attack was generally weakened in 2010-11 due to a lack of physicality in the paint.

According to a piece in Spain-based AS.com, Clay Tucker, Novica Velickovic and Sergi Vidal are expected to depart the club next season and management is considering whether to extend Pablo Prigioni. While some in the Madrid front office wish to pursue Jaycee Carroll of CB Gran Canaria, this would be in deference to his three-ball skills rather than the expected toughening up Herreros would like to see undertaken.

It is also expected that without an ACB title in 2011, Emanuele Molin will not continue as head coach for Madrid and the team may see about Svetislav Pesic and Neven Spahija, though the latter may still be under contract with Fenerbahçe Ülker.

The Whites were really a disappointment during the Final Four, especially when the fans and the club were on a high about making it to the Final Four (finally, after a 15-year hiatus). However, the young roster lacked the competitiveness that were expected of them, especially at this level of competition. Coach Le Molin, if he indeed ends up staying with the Whites for next season, has a lot of work to do in order to improve their ability to compete with the best of the best!
