Oldboy in London: New York Knicks superfan Spike Lee checks out O2, tweets with fans, disses Brooklyn Nets

January 17, 2013

Spike LeeUnfortunately criminally underrated in the greater popular consciousness as a film director (to wit: why are films like Clockers, The 25th Hour, Summer of Sam more well-remembered and -respected?), Spike Lee nevertheless enjoys tremendous notoriety as the world’s biggest, most visible New York Knicks fan – and as a fantastic Tweeter as well.

Spike will naturally be sitting courtside for the Knicks’ game against the Detroit Pistons in London’s O2 Arena tonight to support “Africa’s team” (He just said that). And this morning UK time, the director paid heed to the Knickerbocker nation and his own fans by taking to Twitter; BallinEurope today rounds up Spike’s mass media and social media foray…

The verdict on London in general after the first 24 hours or so? Tweeteth the Spike: “London is HIP.” A few more immediate impressions may be seen below, as Spike got plenty of facetime before international media.

Demonstrating some deadly use of virtual sarcasm, Lee broke the news to the gullible that he may in fact have alternate plans for tonight. ““@SpikeLee are you going to the knick game in London?” No,Taking The Queen Out For Tea.”

In all seriousness, Spike is stoked, however, as evidenced by his weather forecast: “It’s Gonna Be Like Da Garden Tonight LONDON STYLE. Orange And Blue Skies Over The United Kingdom. GOD SAVE DA KNICKS.”

In case you were wondering, the director informed the Tweetosphere that he’ll be wearing Saville Row footwear tonight, which naturally prompted one lightning-quick (hey, that’s what it takes these days) marketing type to appeal, “Spike come to saville row, we got you. Free top hats, coat tails, bow ties and church’s brogues for top Knicks fans to wear…” as of this writing, that pitch went out about one hour ago; BiE wonders how many are keeping watch for Mr. Lee out there right now…

Incidentally, no word on what sort of headwear he’ll be breaking out at the game. BiE thinks England needs to get a look of this baby:

Tonight, Spike will be partying with Baron Davis, in fact; here’s to hoping for a few revealing tweets and/or Instagrams from that pub crawl…

And one of the most quotable guys in all the American film industry – even when the subject isn’t Quentin Tarantino or Clint Eastwood flicks – Spike gets maximum trash-talking power leveraged on Twitter as well, i.e. “What other team?” Ouch!

Let me paste a post of the great “Grinder” on insidehoops

“Bobby Brown just put on a clutch clinic and destroyed Spanoulis on V-Span’s home floor to grab a huge road win for his team.

Brown had 22 points and 5 huge ones in the last few seconds of the game to pull off an insane comeback.

    Brown – 22 points/6 assists/3 steals/3 turnovers
    Spanoulis – 13 points/5 assists/0 steals/4 turnovers

Woj had an article recently saying that Brown could be available to NBA teams this season because Siena is struggling financially. Anyone need a high scoring combo guard off the bench?”

Well, I’ve never seen Brown play, but if he destroyed Spanoulis like that, then God knows my Sixers need him as a backup to Jrue, and maybe play alongside him as a shooting guard.
Although DC will require him to play defense. Can he play defense?

Ding dong the troll is dead!

I think BiE has seen the last of it’s resident troll, at least for an extended period of time. In case you didn’t hear Bobby Brown’s Siena had an amazing come to beat Spanoulis’ Olympiacos making Siena 4-0 and basically eliminating Olympiacos from the quarter-finals at 1-3. Brown totally outplayed Spanoulis on 22 points, 6 assists, 3 steals and 3 turnovers while Spanoulis had 13 points, 5 assists, 0 steals and 4 turnovers.

On insidehoops, where you have to register, the resident troll can only go by one name “Euroleague”, he posted how it was a fix because the clock froze with 10 seconds left in the game. He is right about the clock stopping

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI9e0W5f93I

He claimed it was an elaborate mafia fix where the time keeper (the game was in Greece so it was Olympiacos’ time keeper) purposely stopped the clock, even though he stopped it when Olympiacos had the ball, and all the Olympiacos’players had a timer in their heads so they would stop playing exactly when the game ends, not three seconds more and play no D, while Bobby Brown who must have been in on the fix scored the winning basket.

As absurd as that seems it is unfortunate that the mechanical error (which really shows how bush league Euroleague is to have such a mistake during the last seconds of a tie game in the top 16) happened so the troll can have this excuse for why Spanoulis lost again. It’s like the Nigerian game he called the fix even though the Greeks had more free-throws this game was the same with Olympiacos getting 5 more free-throws than Siena.

So the reason the troll is gone is because he has two choices he either has to accept the fact that:

    1. Spanoulis is not even going to make the Euroleague quarter-finals which will mean another year he will not win MVP, which he never has, or even be selected to an All-Euroleague team while he has been outplayed by Bobby Brown (who at the least will be All-Euroleague 1st team) of 5 ppg in his two year NBA career (and really even before this game Siena was 3-0 in the Top 16 and Olympiacos was 1-2.)

But we all know he is never going to admit to that, he will claim it is a fix but unlike the Olympic qualifying game which was was FIBA which he says is ruled by Stern this was in Euroleague game so he will have to admit that

    1. Euroleague is fixed and really if this game was so blatantly fixed who knows how many other games were fixed. He even mentioned he is going to stop watching.

So his choices are either that Spanoulis was outplayed this year by 5ppg Bobby Brown or Euroleague is fixed.

Therefore I predict the end of the troll or at least a long hiatus.

Our beloved Eurowolves got even more European the alst days and it seems to be a nice add after two games so maybe a small article about our home team 🙂

@Gabe. Thanks for the info from inside hoops. There’s really no doubt it’s really just one person all these years commenting here about this Euroball equality with the NBA which is patently ridiculous, but there are other Euros we have debated on this site whom we may disagree with, but offer legitimate points of view. I hope we will have more of these legitimate discussions.

@vinzzz. I’m disappointed with the Wolves. Rubio, so far, has been a shell of himself from last year . He spoke about his frustrations, and the fact that there’s still pain that he feels, and it could take 3-6 more months to recover completely. I am looking forward for the real Rubio to come back. The Wolves, have been beset by injuries to Love, Pekovic, Schved, and now they are reeling badly.

@Gabe. Finally saw the thread in inside hoops. It was my first time on the site. The resident troll here uses “Euroleague” as his name on inside hoops.com with “crazed troll” inscribed also. Was “crazed troll” added by the moderator?

Basically, he’s a laughing stock on that site While he does hinder better discussions, you have to admit he’s kinda adorable with his vulgar language and ridiculous views. hehe

Yeah the moderator there dubbed him “crazed troll”. It’s funny to see how the other posters react to him. Most of them just ignore him as a troll but a lot of them just reply that they don’t care. I mean it’s one thing on BiE to be discussing Euroleague but insidehoops main forum is about the NBA and you get this crazed troll who keeps bringing up Euroleague. He has basically turned Euroleague into a joke and on-running gag for a bunch of “NBA only” fans who before really had no idea what is was.

On the other hand, and I have wrote this before, it’s sort of unfortunate because there are some European/Euroleague fans on the site who could add to the discussion and actually educate some NBA only fans but the poster “Euroleague” has trolled so bad that any mention of Euroleague brings out the trolls on all sides.
