The Currywurst-with-French fries trade explained

November 19, 2008

We’ve already talked about what happened to Marcus Slaughter in Bremerhaven a few days ago, but the story has now somehow come to a crazy conclusion. But let’s start from the beginning.

Marcus Slaughter is a young US player with a lot of talent. Born in 1985 and after a great campaign with San Diego State in the NCAA, Slaughter landed his first professional contract in Turkey at Pinar Karsiyaka, where he played under coach Okan Cevik and together with Rashard Griffith. After a short stint with the Miami Heat, Slaughter moved to Israel to sign with Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem. He played only a few games for the Israeli team, as he was released after meeting with a girlfriend in a hotel room on a ULEB Cup trip to Strasbourg in France – At least that’s his way of telling the story; the official team version says Slaughter met with a call girl and was cut immediately after this. Up to you to judge.

Later that season, Slaughter played in France at Gravelines, and we don’t know if the girl was still somewhere in the story.

This summer, after having played NBA Summer League ball for the Mavericks, Slaugther moved to Bremerhaven and his discipline-focused head coach Dr. Sarunas Sakalauskas. After putting up incredible numbers to start the season, Slaughter was surprisingly missing on the team’s road trip to Cologne. No reason was officially announced but a local newspaper talked about disciplinary reasons because the player ate currywurst (spicy German sausage with curry sauce) with French fries 30 minutes before an official game. Other sources say that relations between Sakalauskas and Slaughter were not that great because the basketball philosophies of the two were too different. After the game in Cologne, Bremerhaven officially announced that Slaughter was injured.

However, this did not prevent Slaughter from visiting a game of the local ice hockey team in Bremerhaven. But as the visit was not enough, he got some kind of farewell show at the ice rink, according to people present at the game. Only one day later, Slaughter was officially released by Bremerhaven and had already signed a contract with Le Havre … in France. Now once again, we don’t know if the French girl from Strasbourg was the reason Slaughter’s return to France; however, Slaughter looks pretty happy about the signing as you can see in his presentation picture below.

So I guess you recognize the gear he is wearing? Yes: It’s still the Eisbären Bremehaven stuff. So we won’t be surprised to see Bremehaven management suing Slaughter for stealing their jacket. We’ll keep you updated.

It’s very likely he like puppies and children. After all, nobody knows what Currywurst is REALLY made of.

it seems as if marcus has some hidden issues which somehow only come to the surface when the s*** already hit the fan. he truely is a superb baller “at least” in the european contests. i don´t believe that all of the clubs did him wrong, there must be more to at least one story in his european campaign. i will follow his stay in Le Havre closely to see how he developes with the club. put your ego too the side and focus on a good ending in at least one of the leagues otherwise the chance of returning to the nba will be slim to none.

    cheers

Bremerhaven now has released an official statement on the Slaughter case. In it is said that Slaughter completely refused to integrete in the team and showed not much effort in training. He had even stopped talking to his teammates for a whole week after the game against Oldenburg and therefore lost all respect in the team. The Eisbären meanwhile signed former Manresa player Craig Callahan as a replacement.

Probably someone forgot to tell him that a career as an athlete is a gift in a world where people spend their lives in front of quadratic boxes..
this guy should really stop by an it-company to appreciate his life.
maybe he would eat more vegetables then and keep his job.

He’s not that great a player at all. Only thing he can do is block shots, dunk and sing and dance with the fans. I’m a die-hard Hapoel fan and even though it was sad to see him released last season, basketball-wise it barely affected the team.

I’m sure, that his agent told him to cool down and to keep in mind his carrier!
In my point of view he is a Troll and I’m absolutely unhappy that he probably will hold position 1 in the ranking for BBL-Topscorer for the whole season 🙁

I think there’s a rule that you have to have played a certain number of games in order to quallify for the scoring list. So at some point of time in the second half of the season, he will vanish from that list.

it is enough to take part in 5 games… Slaughter has made 8 or 9 games… so unfortunately we will see him (maybe) the whole saison as leader on this list 🙁
There are 3-4 other players close to him… I hope somebody of them will beat him!
    I prefer Adam Hess 😉
Nice to see that he is also leader in turnover per game… 😀

First of all there’s always to sides to a story, for those of you who want to be judgemental. First learn all the facts, if you read you’ll see that he scored 29 pts 12 rbs and played in the game that they claimed he was hurt in. That doesn’t make a lot of sense, not to mention every time you turn around theses guys are on different teams, they release American players like throwing away tissue, that’s not one players issue, it seems when these teams are losing or having other issues they release the player or the coach, it’s seems to always be the American player. Slaughter played in Turkey no problem, played in France no problem, played in Israel released after 5 games, @ th end of the season so was the coach, Bremerhaven!!!!! maybe….. thy released the best player in the league because, they didn’t want to pay him anymore, why would you @ 1-9

@tmpernod: I think it’s 5 games after 10 gamedays, and 17 after 34. This is how it usually works, but I might be mistaken.

He played tonight with LeHavre (at home) vs “my” SIG (Strasbourg…the town of the girlfriend in the hotel): 25 mins / 8pts/4rbs

At the end nobody knows what really happened on the North Sea Coast. But I’m sure that Slaughter also made mistakes. And so I’m feeling that it had been better for him and first of all much more respectfully for Fans and his team mates etc. to act little bit different than he has done.

    @robbe
I hope you are right. Otherwise this “worst case” will be discussed the whole saison…

All of you are HATERS Marc does not have any body pricing or tattoos like most of these players. Marc is a man of GOD! Like Christ you are the same people who help Christ to the cross, he did nothing but well and he was not enough. No one knows Marc like his family and his family close friends. Where were you people when he was 10 years old when his older brother was murder by man who had killed his six black person in his life and was still walking the street of Los Angeles. Marc is a great baller but like Christ we all have to deal with judgmental people who live is this world and do nothing but judge others.
