What will happen in Köln?

February 6, 2008

We talked already about their financial problems several times. Now the first two players have officially left the team. And the team faces deadline to find the necessary funds to avoid disappearing.

Aleksandar Nadjfeji and Immanuel McElroy have asked the club officially to be released. They have interesting offers from other German or international teams even if the club denies having received any offers from other teams. Both are rumored to go either to the German powerhouses ALBA Berlin or Brose Baskets Bamberg. In fact, Imac would be a nice addition for the team from the German capital where some power from the bench on the Guard positions would be nice. And Bamberg coach Dirk Bauermann has always been a fan of the very versatile Nadjfeji.

Tonight the team played against ALBA in the German Cup and both players were already not with the team anymore. They have said goodbye (at least one did it in person) to the officials this afternoon and are now waiting to publish officially where they will earn the money for their families. It was a big loss though tonight and the team of coach Sasa Obradovic, who is said to be the Number 1 candidate to take over the Polish NT, will have to focus on the basketball court even if there is a deadline turning around their heads.

In fact, until the 18th February, the team has to come up with guarantees that they can secure their budget until the end of the season. And the amount to find is about 1.5mio €. With the departure of two big salaries (about 200k/yr), this number is probably reduced already. And rumors about another top player to leave are consistent. After having been said to be in contact with Marrousi, Toby Bailey seems to be on the shopping list of Ricoh Manresa in Spain.

We will see and of course keep you update on this story as long as the deadline is approaching.
