WNBA coming to Europe

October 9, 2007

We already reported that the Finals MVP and WNBA champion Cappie Pondexter will come to Europe again this year and play for Turkish club Fenerbahce Istanbul to compete in the Euroelague group “A” against Phard Napoli, TTT Riga, ESB Villeneuve d’ascq Lille, MKB Sopron and CSK A Mosow.

But Cappie is not the only one taking the WNBA game to Europe. Katie Douglas who is married to a Greek guy, just signed a three-months contract with Spanish club Ros Casares where she joins Greek national star Evanthia Maltsi, Tamika Catchings will go to Poland in February and play for Lotos Gdynia, while three San Antonio girls, Chantelle Anderson, Vickie Johnson and Sophia Young signed with one club: Galatasaray Istanbul.

The big stars of the WNBA seem to go where the cold winter (or the big money) is at: Russia. Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson join Spartak Moscow – so if your favorite team is in Group C of the women’s Euroleague it might be a little bit difficult to get passed this team.

This should be an very interesting season for European teams in the top leagues like Spain, France, Italy and of course Russia.

For a full list of the current signings of WNBA players in Europe check out wnba.com.
