April's Fool: How far can it go…

April 2, 2008

As you may have seen, we have made a little joke yesterday when we announced the immediate signing of Marco Belinelli with Montepaschi Siena. What was a too unbelievable to be true story has made some “damage” however as you can see here.

While the first readers could not believe it and wanted to discredit the Euroleague (once again). Thank you Arvids for the nice comment 🙂

If EL allows Siena to add him then it would be totally ridiculous decision. Not that I would not like him to see play basketball where he is actually good at, but the problem is that deadline has passed and if they make an exception then you pretty much have to make exception for everyone else in the business…

The NBA Blog Le Basketbawl took over the story and posted in their daily link section the following message.

It looks like Marco Belinelli really is headed back home. What the hell?

Ok this can happen if you don’t know that the 1st of April is a day where you make traditionally jokes or put a hoax on your website. But I could not believe how far this would go.

Because the things became more serious after the story has been posted on ESPN’s True Hoop. Henry Abbott wrote the following bullet in his list.

This is, apparently, an April Fool’s joke. Warriors PR assures me that Marco Belinelli is not, in fact, headed back to Europe.

So Henry went as far as going to call the Warriors press officers to get a confirmation about our April’s Fool story. So we checked with Henry what was going on that he believed this, and here is the little chat transcript Tobias had with him yesterday evening.

BallinEurope: Henry – I hope you are not mad about our joke … 🙂

TrueHoop: No no no!
Just had to make sure it wasn’t real. ‘Cause that would have been huge! they actually showed it to Marco.

BallinEurope: so Marco is going to be mad 😉

TrueHoop: No, Marco just laughed and said “who are these people who write this stuff?”

Well, thank you guys for believing this incredible story…

I love that it took on a life of its own. My problem was, I read the TrueHoop article quote first and then saw your article. I looked at your’s as sort of a confirmation that it could be true.

    Idiot! 🙂
