Caracter drama: Lakers’ pick draws interest from Italy, Israel, Olympiacos

July 26, 2010

While Los Angeles Lakers’ second-round draft pick Derrick Caracter impressed in NBA summer league play – even to rank third behind John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins in the NBA.com “Rookie Ladder” – the former UTEP Miner may yet have to wait one more year to play in the big league. No matter, though, as reportedly some four major European clubs are interesting in obtaining the services of the big man.

After missing one season in college ball due to a transfer out of Rick Pitino’s Louisville, Caracter stomped through the 2009-10 NCAA season in producing a line of 14.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 0.9 blocks and 1.0 steals per game: stats impressive enough to earn Caracter the label of The Second-Round Steal of the 2010 NBA Draft.

Amazingly, Caracter only bettered his play in the summer league, putting together a crazy line of 15.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg and 1.4 bpg in five games – and Lakers fans ecstatically awaited another big man with high basketball IQ who might someday take over for Pau Gasol and/or be coming off the bench when the inevitable injury to Andrew Bynum occurs.

Except that the Lakers front office went out and shored up that frontcourt real good with a trio of veterans in Theo Ratliff and Matt Barnes. Los Angeles currently has 10 forwards and centers from which to pick and choose (figuring in the fairly safe assumption that Adam “The Moustache” Morrison won’t be back): Barnes, Bynum, Gasol, Ratliff, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom, D.J. Mbenga, Luke Walton and Devin Ebanks. We can also reckon that Mbenga and Powell will be gone with the new signings coming aboard.

(Could the 12th roster spot actually come down to a choice between Caracter and Sasha Vujacic? Weird.)

Should Caracter not make the Lakers roster, however, there’ll be no shortage of suitors. According to a Twitter from New York Post sportswriter Marc Berman on Saturday, “If [the] Lakers, [Denver] Nuggets or [New York] Knicks can’t sign Caracter, word is two Italian teams, one Israeli club and Olympiakos have interest.”

Now it doesn’t take Holmesian-level logic capacity to deduce the identities of at least two of the three unnamed (presumably) Euroleague teams in the running to bid for Caracter’s services: Clearly the “Israeli club” is Maccabi Tel Aviv – presuming Santa Claus hasn’t recently dumped an early Xmas gift of a few million on Galil/Gilboa – and one of those “two Italian teams” is certainly the American player-loving Virtus Roma. The logical assumption would be to pencil in Montepaschi Siena as the second Italia squad.

But the best fit of all in Europe (and probably the highest contract offer) for Caracter would probably be with the Reds. Caracter might even ultimately be considered an upgrade from the departed Sofoklis Schortsanitis: Caracter may even be adding a few pounds over Shortsanitis in addition to possessing higher speed and slightly better mobility.

At least one Clipper blogger noted that “Sofo did *not* acquit himself well in Summer League, even taking all of those things into consideration. […] He didn’t handle double teams well, and he didn’t convert free throws when he went to the line.” While Caracter did get whistled mighty often, his hustle was well noted and his free-throw shooting was fine at 65%, a number dragged down by his game two when he went just 3-of-7 from the ‘stripe. (In three years of college ball, he shot 62.8% from the line and 67% in his senior year.)

So how about it, Olympicos fans? How would you like this guy on your team…?

i think caracter is capable of contributing right away as a reserve for the lakers. i don’t think he’ll be a double-double machine, of course, but his combination of low-post skills and a nice touch from outside complement the abilities of lamar odom, the high post passing skills of pau gasol, the strength and size of andrew bynum, and the many respectable 3pt shooters the lakers have amassed. that being said, he will be a restricted free agent in 3 years, and a toxic, front-loaded offer in light of their already high pay-roll could spell the end of his career as a laker.

do i want to see caracter take his talents to europe? no. but if he does, the lakers will have a stronger bargaining position because they’d still own his rights in 3yrs.

in summary, caracter is sort of in a win-win situation. he can probably make more money in europe now. but there is also so much talent around him, he can shine right away and increase his value in the eyes of GMs, who will no doubt want to improve themselves and weaken their rivals in one fell swoop. see: Portland Trailblazers and their dealings with the Utah Jazz.

As a Lakers fan and one who caught a bit of Caracter in summer league play, i’m down with Derrick joining the Lakers — especially with frail forwards like Luke Walton and Andrew Bynum on the roster. On the other hand, if Olympiacos gives him a 1-and-1 deal, that’ll certainly be hard for him to pass up with the presumed big bucks involved. I think we’ll definitely see him in L.A. in 2011-12 if not this season.

      Thanks for reading!

      Cheers,
      Os.

If this guy has a chance to sign a deal for $1 million or more per season overseas he would be CRAZY not to take it. If he isn’t any good, he’ll make a ton more money than he will playing for the Lakers, and if he is good he will have tremendously greater leverage when he negotiates his NBA contract. Missing a year or two (where he’d be a reserve who gets, at most, 7 minutes a game) would be no big deal, and would line his bank account. Go for the money, young man.

    Some inaccuracies here.

Lakers currently have 7 forwards/centers under contract, not 11.

Josh Powell has signed with Atlanta.

    DJ Mbenga is a UFA.

Ebanks has not been signed yet(like Caracter).

Of the 7 under contract Luke Walton is still suffering from long term back injuries and could possibly miss the entire upcoming season.

Lakers could easily sign Caracter and Ebanks to fill our their froncourt, and it would be cheaper signing them than bringing back Mbenga or any other vet min.

    Fisher/Blake
    Kobe/Sasha
    Artest/Barnes/Ebanks/Walton(injured)
    Gasol/Odom/Caracter
    Bynum/Ratliff

Mitch Kupcheck has been quoted as saying that LA could go with a roster of 14 this year, if they decide to bring back Shannon Brown. Otherwise you are likely looking at their 13 man roster above once opening day starts.

@ Factchecker: Oops on the roster problems. I was going off this list:

      http://www.lakersuniverse.com/currentroster.htm

I totally forgot about Powell, true, but i didn’t list the other guys as “under contract,” rather just that the Lakers just have to choose from among them — aren’t they still thinking about Mbenga? (Please advise here.) Brain ain’t what it used to be. Thanks for the help and thanks for reading!

There’s one more mistake I’m surprised no one caught…

    It’s DeMarcus Cousins, not Derrick.

    @OS Davis

Right now they have Ratliff signed for Mbenga’s “3rd string” center position, and neither fill the 4 spot very well so they will be looking for someone along the lines of Caracter to back up Odom.

From LA’s perspective it’s either bring Caracter in on a second round salary of around 400-500k or bring in a vet min backup 4 at anywhere from 1-1.3 mil(vet min).

Of course Caracter would have to agree to a contract still, and he may feel going overseas would be better for his career but LA does have room for him on their roster currently and they’d much rather sign him than a vet min.

There is no way that he is ready for the level of a club like Olympiacos and very doubtful that he would be for the level of Maccabi and Siena. Sounds like agent’s games.

If he is ready for the Lakers , what makes you think he wouldn’t be ready for Olympiacos, Maccabi, or Siena are you joking. If he can play on the world’s best basketball team how in the hell would he not be ready for those leagues, get real, the truth is any NBA ready player can play on those squads, sorry, to bust your bubble.
