Rumor: Timberwolves pursue Team Spain connection with Derrick Williams for Pau proposal

February 16, 2012

Could Pau Gasol be reunited with his Spain teammate Ricky Rubio on the Minnesota Timberwolves? According to Hoops World, Minny management is pursuing such a situation and is reportedly willing to send over rookie Derrick Williams and draft choices to the Los Angeles Lakers for Pau.

No comment seems to have been made by Lakers management, but it is no secret that the no. 3 spot needs some serious shoring up in L.A. Perhaps the Busses will complete the deal if Metta World Peace is thrown in…

This seems like a horrible trade for the Lakers. Pau is arguably one of the best 10 players in the world (he was robbed for the all-star game). I mean I thought thought the same thing when Memphis traded Pau for his brother and I was wrong because now Marc is almost as good as Pau and 5 years younger. Still Memphis was rebuilding. But how can the Lakers rebuild with a 33 year old Bryant? I’m sure Bryant would not be happy. They are no way going to be better in the short term with Derek Williams instead of Pau. I don’t see the trade happening.

Yeah, this makes no sense, LA would need to take back at least 3 players from Minnesota ( more likely 4) just to make salaries work.

I get that Pau could play at the 5, but I don’t see Minnesota having Love and Pau in the same frontcourt as the foundation of the team.

Minny would be better off trading Williams for a true SG

Wow that would be horrible. As a fan of USA it would suck to have to wait 3 years for international competition, FIBA Americas is too easy. Right now it is perfect with every two years there being an international tournament. I think a big elephant in the room which the article doesn’t mention is what happened in the 2010 WC. So many stars didn’t show up. The Olympics is so much bigger in marketing, sponsorship opportunity, fans (at least in North America, I would guess Asia and probably parts of Europe too, not to mention the casual fans, I mean I live in the USA and I would say about 90% of the BASKETBALL fans didn’t even know the WC was taking place!) And now that basketball is gone so global it isn’t just the USA how is not sending their stars to the WC. If you look at the Eurobasket final, 9 out of the 10 players with the most minutes played, play in the NBA and they prefer to play in the Olympics (and therefore Olympic qualifyiers) than in the WC too.

This trade was made up in fairyland. It will never happen.
