short friday's cigarettes

December 7, 2007
  • Have you heard about the “fashion war” going on between Brad Miller and Beno Udrih? Well it seems that Tony Parker, another European player, tops them all in terms of fashion
  • What a night for Basketball in Berlin: Berlin wins a ULEB cup game 141-127 – after battling through 5! overtimes. Three players broke the record for minutes played in a game, which was 55 minutes – the new record: 63 minutes. The games also brought up some discussion about Bobby Brown being an NBA player – interesting – you need just one outstanding game and people talk about you being an NBA player
  • It looks like fantasy games are also huge in Europe. While a lot of people try to win the Euroleague fantasy challenge – which is a VIP trip to the Euroleague final four in Madrid – the Spanish ACB league also has it’s own fantasy challenge. You think having 5 teams is a lot? Listen what Euroleague fantasy manager Javier Gancedo told us: “There are people with 500 and 600 teams (in the ACB fantasy league)” That is crazy! What are the prizes in this league?!
  • As we blogged it live yesterday, Panathinaikos won by 7 against Real Madrid. Sure – they are still unbeaten, but will that be enough to be on top of group C in the end? To me it wasn’t really the team Madrid that lost the game – a lot goes to the coach Joan Plaza, who wanted to battle coach Obradovic. If you have followed the game closely you saw that Panathinaikos played with four guards and Mike Batiste. Coach Plaza also left Papadopoulos on the bench and played with four guards. Maybe I am wrong but to me it seems like this won Panathinaikos the game – or if you want to say it the other way – this lost Real Madrid the game last night. Maybe Plaza has learned his lesson – Real will face another Euroleague team within 48 hours in the Spanish league: Unicaja Malaga. Both teams lost their Euroleague games this week – but Malaga in a very special way against Efes Pilsen
  • Big signing week in Italy: Fortitudo Bologna (Uleb Cup) signed veteran PF Iker Iturbe as a replacement for injured Spencer Nelson. As we did report a few weeks ago UPIM is not very happy with Oscar Torres so they are still looking for a SG, since Torres is too inconsistent. Vidivici Bologna got Massimo Bulleri from Armani Jeans Milano, who is currently injured and won’t be back until February – building up for the future I guess? Talking about future – another Italian club – Eldo Napoli signed u15- national player Gaetano Spera. One reason might be that Spera is 205cm only being 15 years old
  • Since we are talking about rumors – what is going on with Sani Becirovic? We have heard of some weird rumor that he wants to leave Panathinaikos – didn’t look like that last night right? 20 minutes – 10 points and a ranking of 13!
  • Zalgiris Kaunas is planning  a new arena! If everything goes right it is supposed to be  open in 2010 –  great news for Lithuania – it will offer 14’800 seats!

The Fantasy game in ACB is way more popular than the Euroleague Fantasy; almost 500,000 teams and 100,000 users play for the prize that is worth a 6,000 euros trip anywhere you want. Besides that, Fantasy Game was built with the same system and similar rules than SuperManager (ACB’s fantasy name). As far as I know SuperManager was created like three years before Fantasy.
