New FIBA rules in for 2008-2009

May 27, 2008

We’ve already talked about the rules changes that FIBA has made in order to improve the game of basketball . Tonight, the French basketball federation published a report about the FIBA/ULEB meeting of 14 May concerning the organization of next season.

Besides the fact that the ULEB Cup and the FIBA Eurocup will change monikers in order to get make way for a sponsor’s name, the important decision is that the clubs from the Leagues participating in the European competitons must “use the new FIBA rules in their respective leagues.”

Though this is unfortunately not very clear, it can only mean that the rule changes to be made in 2012 — three point line at 6.75 meters, rectangle zone area and the no-charge zone — must be used from next season on in the top European leagues already.

It seems that the ULEB has persuaded FIBA to install these rules in reality from the 2008-2009 season on. Now if this is the case in the ULEB leagues, will FIBA also go for these changes in those competitions that would otherwise only see these new rules either in 2010 or 2012? I think they should.

Don’t add the no charge zone because it takes away from the grit of the game
