On Zalgiris Kaunas and developing Clutch Identity

January 27, 2013

Zalgiris Kaunas logoAfter watching Žalgiris Kaunas stumble through heartbreakers and possible backbreakers in the Euroleague Top 16 round, BallinEurope’s agent in Lithuania, Y., couldn’t help but confirm his suspicions about the Greens’ performances in crunch time. Y. probably wasn’t, but you may be surprised at the secret culture of losing within the Lithuanian power…

It’s almost unreal, as though the Gods of Basketball had banished one green-and-white soul from Lithuania with no prospect of return, a club that should be grouped with FC Barcelona, Olympiacos Piraeus, CSKA Moscow and other teams who have a long history, produce amazing talents for national teams, lead their respective national basketball, and simply win.

Yet for some reason, BC Žalgiris seems destined to lose.

An excellent coach + The biggest budget in years + A classy roster with splendid chemistry + Top supporting crowds — This appeared to be the perfect formula for Žalgiris’ 2012-13 Euroleague campaign. But it’s been just enough to fall just short.

After an impressive run in the EL regular season resulting in an 8-2, first place finish atop Group C, Žalgiris began the Top 16 in the now typical manner. With four losses in five games, including three road thrillers against Panathinaikos Athens, Real Madrid and Anadolu Efes Istanbul, could have just broken the hearts of victory-famished fans of Lithuania’s basketball pride from Kaunas.

Whether it’s Oliver Lafayette, Marko Popovič or Darjuš Lavrinovič, whether it’s an open mid-range jumper, three-pointer or even a layup, the spell remains unbroken, as Žalgiris fell in Istanbul 56-52 this week. This could will have finally broken the back of the team — If it does, it will be no surprise to anyone following the Lithuanian champions for several years.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1HHToLM_8w&w=525&h=295]

So much more is at stake than this lone season … Every year the distant memory of 1998-99 is brought up, but the dream is never relived. Perhaps because it is literally taken as a dream now.
Joan Plaza was shocked to hear players’ comments that Žalgiris “cannot be competitive against Olympiakos, CSKA or other great clubs.” The attempts by the Spaniard to change this mentality has been successful to some extent, but players still seem to lack faith in themselves at key stages of the season, as the team’s Top 16 start illustrates.

Over the years, Žalgiris has developed a losing culture. It has not won a Top 16 road game since 2003-04. Its record in Top 16 since inception of the ULEB Euroleague is 8-39.

But the lack of faith can perhaps best be measured by results of close games.

Since 1993-94, when the modern-day Žalgiris started competing in European tournaments, its record in all games decided by four points or less is 25-38. Interestingly, when pressure is raised, the Greens are much worse: In Top 16 or playoff stages, these numbers drop to 3-18. In other words, during the regular season, Žalgiris is 22-20 (a .523 winning percentage) in close games, and a dismal .125 thereafter — and two of those three victories came in that legendary 1998-99 season.

In stark comparison, over the same period, Panathinaikos won 24 games out of 38 close games in Euroleague playoff stages.

But it has not been this way forever. Back in the 1980s, when Kaunas had its first experience on the European stage, its playoff record in those four-point games stands at a neat 6-6 through 1990. One might simply wonder what happened to the following generation of Lithuania players. Mental weakness, lack of leadership, bad psychology, mentality – you name it – has clearly impeded Žalgiris’ chances to become a European basketball stronghold.

The only hope, the single bright photon of light, is that if any team to overturn the spell, it is this season’s side from Kaunas. With nine games to go in the Euroleague Top 16, Žalgiris needs to regroup and show full dedication to perseverance and grow that winning mentality.

It won’t be easy. But with Plaza’s guidance, Žalgiris still has a chance to find the way back to basketball heaven.

And now, the album.

Joan Plaza, Zalgiris Kaunas

Years of history are against Joan Plaza…

2003-04, one of those “should have been” seasons, ended with two missed three throws in the clutch…

Although Žalgiris won the Saporta Cup in 1997/98, they still went 1-3 in games decided by four points or less…

Arvydas Sabonis

The 80s were brighter, thanks to best player in his generation…

And Žalgiris’ last game-winning buzzer-beating win was in 2003-04, as Eduardo Cota puts it in:

    1. Jeremy Pargo was never considered a top player in Euroleague.

    2. Jeremy Pargo averaged 14.4 points and 4.5 assists as a starter this season with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA.

    3. Pargo is already negotiating a contract with the Boston Celtics.

    4. Siena lost in the Italian League yet AGAIN!

    5. Siena won’t even win the Italian Cup or Italian League.

    6. The “worst scrub in Europe” Ioannis Bourousis will win both of those titles, while Brown, the “greatest player ever in Europe” loses them.

    7. Gabe is a clear-cut pathological liar and psychopath, and the world’s biggest troll.

Pargo was selected all-Euroleague 2nd team and lead a Euroleague team in points, assists and minutes played when they made the Euroleague final.

      http://www.euroleague.net/competition/teams/showteamstats?clubcode=TEL&seasoncode=E2010

He was then released by the Cavs, the third worst team in the NBA. He he went from starting, leading in minutes, assists and points in the 2nd best team in Euroleague to being released by the third worst team in the NBA.

As for Siena in Euroleague they are undefeated in the top 16 while Bourousis could not even make the top 16.

In Maccabi he was a starter who led them to the Euroleague finals. In the NBA he was a starter for 11 games on the 3rd worst team in the league but was so horrible that he was regulated to the bench and was so horrible as a bench player he was released.

It’s easy to be a starter in Euroleague where your competition is Spanoulis. You can lead your team to the Euroleague finals. It’s different being a starter in the NBA where your competition is Rondo and Holiday. You get benched and then released by the 3rd worst team in the leage.

Jeremy Pargo was All Euroleague 2nd team(Wiki). If that’s not a top player, then I don’t know what is. He didn’t average 14ppg this year but 7ppg and 2 assists for the Cavs in a league where guards average 9.7ppg. So he’s well below average in the NBA. Check ESPN stats.

There are ONLY 2 basketball teams in the top 50 in the world, the Lakers and the Knicks. The rest are football teams, American or soccer, and the rest of the franchises are from other sports.

You’re really shameless with your lies. What happened with your mama’s boy Spanoulis in the EL vs. Brown? Let’s talk about that.

You are comparing his numbers as a starter, to win he was not playing. That makes you a lying scumbag.

Anyway, once he signs with the Celtics you will never mention him again, as you are a deranges psycho. You will be on yet another player to attack and harass and bash here. Because you are sick in the head and you think it is cool to harass and attack players and people here.

90% of their funding and profit are football. That is why they showed their football teams on the list. It’s like their minor league teams. The ownership of the Yankees also own their minor league team the Staten Island Yankees. So I can claim that the Staten Island Yankees have a higher value than the Knicks because they are owned by the same people who own the Yankees.

          And again…

Dragic averaged 10 ppg and 3 apg his one full season in Euroleague

While in the NBA he averages 9 ppg and 4 apg (and remember NBA stats are inflated compared to Euroleague)
          http://www.nba.com/playerfile/goran_dragic/

Rubio was selected for Euroleague rising star (best player 22 and under) and led a Euroleague champion in assists and steals.
          http://www.euroleague.net/competition/teams/showteamstats?clubcode=BAR&seasoncode=E2009

Lawson played a total of 7 games in Euroleague.

And Jennings played in Euroleague as an 18 year old in which should have been his freshman year in college.

But keep going with your lies and exaggerations. I’ll just wash Bobby Brown tear up Euroleague while Spanoulis cries.

Yes. I posted his NBA averages and I posted the one year he played a full season in Euroleague. Apart from that one season in Euroleague when he averaged 9.7 and 3.1 he played a total of two Euroleague games. Yes two. But if you want to include those two games (wow two games) his career average in Euroleague is 8.6 and 2.5, while in the NBA it is 8.9 and 3.8 and again NBA stats are inflated compared to Euroleague with the game being 8 minutes longer and assists being harder to get counted.

So Dragic has averaged .3 more points and 1.3 more assists in the 8 minutes longer NBA game where it is harder to get assists counted yet he was such a scrub in Euroleague who is doing so much better in the NBA.

Any more lies? But keep saying Dragic was a scrub in Euroleague and I will keep using facts to show how much of a liar you are.

As a Zalgiris fan I can surely say that Sonny Weems is a selfish player. He can be a great leader for an average team (as he was for Zalgiris last year) but for a team like CSKA he may do more harm than help even with seemingly good statistics.

what euroleague season??he played 2games for caja laboral in the euroleaque signing in november and leaving a month later!!!
the point is that coming back to europe during lock out season as it happend in 2011is all about putting in minimum effort gaining maximum dollar..how many of those “ALLSTARS” that crossed the atlantic actually justified the money spend by the teams to sign them??only a select few and definetly not the U.S boys who came over for a quick bug not knowing that the euroleague is a very competitive, no nonsense competition with a lot of talent ,where the only way to win matches is to put the team first and leave everything on the court instead of 30 attempts per game, dunking over the rim and high fiving everybody with at least one healthy arm..the ones that really proved their worth ,not suprisingly ,where the ones who went back to their roots where everything started for them bevor they moved to the nba like gallinari with olympia milano, pekovic with partizan belgrade, batum with nancy ,kirilenko with cska moska to name the few ones who posted stats and performances worthy of their names and pedigree not only justifying but honoring the sums that were spend to get them home!!
sorry i got a bit off topic but i think it has a lot to do with players mindset separating the ones that play the game just and because of the money and those who do allow sentiment to enter their decission making just because i think that a player like nicolas batum could have asked and got 3or 4 times what nancy offered him to play for real or barca or olympiakos..same goes for pekovic i know for a fact that panathinaikos, where he played befor leaving for minnesota, tried and tried but failed to sign him cause belgrade was where his heart and friends still played..
maybe dragic place should have been with olympia ljubliana who put him on the map that first and last season in the euroleague instead of a few dollars more and poor gaming with caja laboral???just trying to put a different spin on thinks

The coach of Baskonia clearly stated that Dragc was signed to be their first string point guard. The coach also stated that he was playing so bad in training and when he played in Euroleague AND HE ALSO PLAYED GAMES IN SPANISH LEAGUE – that he had to be benched.

Because the team was trying to make it out of the regular season stage.

Don’t pretend like he only played 2 games either. He played in Spanish League and was horrible there also.

Here is the proof he also played in Spanish League and also sucked.

    http://www.acb.com/stsacum.php?cod_competicion=LACB&cod_edicion=56&cod_equipo=BAS&totales=0

He was with the team for a long time and he could not move past third string point guard behind an over the hill, past his prime Pablo Prigioni and Pau Ribas.

Any other claims to the contrary is just lying.

Also, Dragic did not play just one season other than that of Euroleague. That’s changing history.

He actually was signed the WHOLE TIME with Baskonia. He TWICE FAILED TO MAKE THE TEAM’S ROSTER DURING TRAINING CAMP.

once he failed to make the roster and was sent on loan to one of the worst teams in Euroleague (Union Olimpija) so he could get some playing time, and the second time he failed to make their roster, he was again being sent on loan, when they accepted a buyout from the Suns.

It was actually 3 years in Baskonia, where he only made the roster ONE TIME, as a THIRD STRING point guard.

That is a THE TRUTH about Goran Dragic’s Euroleague career. The fact is he was a far bigger scrub in Euroleague than even Rubio and Jennings and Lawson. Dragic really was a huge scrub in Euroleague, so much so that he could not even make the roster of his own team two times.

It would be like an NBA player on a rookie scale contract spending two years in the D-League.

      EASY TIGER!!
U maybe got me confused with fan favorites gabe and mike but last thing on my mind is changing stories, fooling people or worse straight lying!!!
Neither am i in any way, shape or form related to Dragic or his Manager ,looking to get him this next big fat contract, far from it so lets do it one more time and move on with our lives iam sure Dragic did!!
First of all, u right !!
He did sign with TAU CERAMICA,SASKI BASKONIA or CAJA LABORAL whatever u want to call them and yes he got loaned to MURCIA that first year and to UNION LJUBLIANA the second year and of course he would have also played in the spanish league but that is as far iam willing to Go!!
There was no 3rd year except u count a few months during 2011 NBA LOCK OUT and 2 EUROLEAGUE GAMES cause thats what we talking about and NOT his spanish league stats, if we agree that the EUROLEAGUE is the best league in the world right after the NBA,right??
The reasson been that PHOENIX paid 500.000$ buy out to sign him, money that the americans only fork out if they very confident about what they getting in return otherwise they could have waited one more year and get him for free and why not since,to use your own words,DRAGIC is or was “a THIRD SPRING POINTGUARD”…
Then u go ahead and claim, very disrespectful and ignorant ,that they sent him to UNION LJUBLIANA one of the worst teams in the EUROLEAGUE!!!!!!!!
Thats a team with a large following, top notch arena and history, but just because Dragic was sent there u lash out against a team that internationaly has the same amount of trophys like BASKONIA(1SAPORTA CUP each)winning theirs against BASKONIA back in 93-94 believe it or not!!
Nationaly no contest 5times during YUGOSLAVIA and 15 SLOVENIAN CHAMPION 19 SLOVENIAN CUPSplus ADRIATIC LEAGUE plus 2 HALL OF FAMERS and champs like JASIKEVICIUS,JURE ZDOVDS,ZUKAUSKAS.ERAZEM LORBEK,NESTEROVIC,ARIEL MC DONALD,WALTER BERRY to name a few…Next time u meet any boys from slovenia u better apologise even if they dont know what u talking about,YOU WILL KNOW!!!
It gets better cause u then go ahead and call PABLO PRIGIONI finished and past his prime and that Dragic should have replaced him at CAJA back in2004-06 when he got signed, right??…
      WRONG AGAIN…
PRIGIONI was far from finnished so check this out from 2004 onwards talking personal achievments..
      SPANISH SUPERCUP MVP 2008
      LED EUROLEAGUE IN ASSIST 2006
      SPANISH CUP MVP 2006.
      JOINED REAL MADRID 2009
OLDEST PLAYER EVER TO SIGN IN THE NBA
AND TO CROWN IT ALL UP
      SPANISH LEAGUES BEST POINTGUARD 2006,2007,2009
Thats as far “past his prime”and over the top” TO USE YOUR OWN WORDS PABLO PRIGIONI years later still played….
Not to mention DRAGIC stats since he plays with the SUNS rewarding him with a 4 year 30$
contract in the NBA and NOT in the D-LEAGUE like predicted.not really but u catch my drift.
And thats all i have to say about fucking GORAN DRAGIC making us battle it out on the web while he is living it up with fast cars and even faster women if hes bit smart, agreed amigo?????
NO more about him we both covered him enough

ABOUT
BallinEurope.com was founded in September 2007 by Christophe Ney (who now runs the excellent scouting-themed website European Prospects) and Tobias Seitz, both then bloggers for FIBA.com with over 10 years’ worth of experience in the professional basketball world each. The mission then was to “provide a very unique perspective of Basketball in and about Europe.”
