Romanian update: New teams, Cup gets under way

Adi Micinic, of TotalBaschet.ro, check in with news of of changes to Romania’s top flight and results from the opening round of the national cup.

The season in Romania began on 19 September with the first leg games in the first round of the Romanian Cup.

Results:

SCM Universitatea Craiova vs U Mobitelco Cluj 82-78
CSU Sibiu vs BC Mureș 84-78
Timba Timișoara vs CSU Asesoft Ploiești 86-108
CSM Oradea vs Concordia Chiajna 81-53
Steaua CSM Bucharest vs BC Timișoara 65-74
Gaz Metan Mediaș vs Energia Rovinari 85-84

BCM U Pitești and Farul Constanța are through to the 2nd round.

The return legs will take place between 26 and 28 September.

The regular season in the Romanian championship is scheduled to begin on 5 October but the very first game will be played on 2 October.

The schedule of the first round:

Concordia Chiajna – Energia Rovinari
BCM U Pitești – BC Timișoara
CSM Oradea – U Mobitelco BT Cluj-Napoca (October 2nd)
Gaz Metan Mediaș – CSU Asesoft Ploiești
Farul Constanţa – CSU Sibiu
SCM Universitatea Craiova – BC Mureș
Steaua CSM EximBank Bucharest – Timba Timişoara

The season begins with the game between the Romanian Cup holder (Gaz Metan Mediaș) and the Romanian champion (CSU Asesoft Ploiești).

The regular season should have started on 28 September with 16 teams but the following things happened:

Steaua Bucharest (21 championships in Romanian basketball) got promoted to the top division and merged with the other team from the Capital city – CSM Bucharest. It resulted Steaua CSM EximBank Bicharest.

CSS Giurgiu decided to retire because they have no money and huge debts from last season.

This is why the schedule was changed and made up for a championship with 14 participants.

This season Romania is represented by 5 clubs in international competition:

EuroCup – CSU Asesoft Ploiesti
EuroChallenge – BC Mures, CSM Oradea, Gaz Metan Medias
Balkan League – SCM U Craiova
