The BallinEurope playoff roundup

May 31, 2008

This time, we can announce one of the biggest surprises of all our reviews, even if not for the followers of this year’s Israeli league closer. Maccabi Tel Aviv has not won the championship this season.

In France, we have reached the semi-final stadium. And we saw two home wins this Saturday with Le Mans beating Roanne and Nancy winning against ASVEL. Draft candidates Nicolas Batum finished the game with 15 points and 6 assists while Luka Bogdanovic hit 5-of-8 from 3 for Le Mans. The story of this series is, however, the fact that Le Mans’ current coach Vincent Collet will take over ASVEL next season. So by beating the team from Villeurbanne eventually, Collet would be assured of not playing in the Euroleague this fall.

In Poland, Milan Gurovic returned to action for Prokom Trefl Sopot after his one-game suspension but it didn’t help his team enough to close the series. Zgorzelec won in Sopot 74-69 behind 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists from Puerto Rican Andres Rodriguez. The Finals will now see a Game 7 on Wednesday to decide the Polish championship.

In Belgium, Spirou Charleroi finally won its first championship since 2004. With a 3-0 sweep, the Spirous could celebrate their title after an hard fought 61-59 win in Bree. Matt Walsh was the man of the game with 19 points and 3 steals while Michael Meeks tried his best for Bree with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
