NBA MVP race heating up

March 13, 2018

James Harden has been the favourite throughout the season but the back-end of the NBA MVP betting race could decide all. We break down the runners and riders to deliver the best value.

It’s no accident that James Harden is out in front as heavy favourite for MVP of the NBA regular season. He likely would have won last season were it not for Russell Westbrook’s historic triple-double average. Harden’s numbers would have almost certainly won him the crown in any other year for the past decade or more. As it stands, he has that memory lingering in the minds of voters while he once again delivers a phenomenal campaign. Bettors have wisely gone in heavy on him but he’s still there at 1/2 for those looking to see some benefit in backing him.

Outside of Harden it’s about heat, or rather who can build it up down the stretch. Anthony Davis has been deemed a MVP in waiting since 2014 but is currently available at 70/1 on some markets. Given how Davis has performed in his last couple of outings, putting up unheard of numbers, and that most of the discussion down the stretch will be around his end of the Western Conference standings, a perfect storm could be about to hit for bettors. You can check out NBA betting odds by CrownBet for the latest predictions on his team’s upcoming matches.

LeBron James is the old reliable in MVP betting and that’s the issue for punters this year. Even the King knows he needs help from factors outside of his control to break in on the race at this stage and the 4/1 odds are stingy despite him being the greatest player alive today. Being the best and winning MVP in a single season are two very different things, particularly when polls close before the playoffs.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has got the best of both worlds in his bid for a late season run. Those who value the eyeball test utterly adore him while stats nerds can point to the ridiculous difference in efficiency for the Milwaukee Bucks when he sits. No team drops in performance with one player off the floor like the Bucks do without Giannis. The Greek Freak is the walking definition of valuable right now. At 18/1, he’s also the walking definition of value in most markets particularly if he can force Milwaukee into a top four seed come the end of the season.
