Irish women’s cup final preview

January 20, 2023

Sunday evening presents a cross Dublin-city clash as Killester, champions in 2020, take on a Trinity Meteors side seeking its first title since 1996. Emmet Ryan breaks it all down.

Who, when, and where
Killester vs Trinity Meteors
National Basketball Arena, Tallaght
Sunday 22 January 17.30 Irish time
Watch: TG4/Basketballireland.tv

Paths to the final
Killester
Rd 1: Bye
QF: 84-71 vs University of Galway Maree
SF: 87-77 vs WIT Wildcats

Meteors
Rd 1: 68-61 vs Glanmire
QF: 76-67 vs Ulster University
SF: 82-60 vs DCU Mercy

Need to know
How Killester adapt to the double big option of Meteors is going to tell us a lot about this game. In Claire Melia and Celena Taborn, the southside club has got a serious combination up front and that’s going to put a real workload on Ieva Bagdanavičienė and Chyna Latimer. With the latter in particular, how she makes space to ensure she can score with regularity is one to watch.

As a result, the point guard duel between Chanell Williams (Killester) and Dayna Finn (Meteors) will undoubtedly prove fascinating while Killester will surely be seeking to make this a more outside in game on both ends in order to stretch Meteors to the max.

What we think
This is a really young Killester team despite having some veterans like Mimi Clarke on the roster and that can cut both ways, leading to fearlessness or getting caught up in the moment. Despite losing just the once all season, Meteors still feel somewhat like a work in progress on the floor and a side that has yet to hit its absolute best basketball.

With both sides averaging in the mid-70s scoring across the season, I’m not expecting a track meet but there are scorers aplenty here so runs will matter more than usual in this one. Killester may be fearless but Meteors look ready to make history and they’re my pick to win on Sunday.
