Look out, Europe! A major force is coming this way from America and ready to dominate across The Continent in Euroleague basketball!
No, Olympiacos hasn’t yet closed the deal for Allen Iverson, but Epiphanny Prince of Rutgers University this week officially changed her playing status to “professional” this week in signing with the sports agency Wasserman Media Group.
Wasserman includes among its clientele Danilo Gallinari, Derrick Rose, and the Paris twins Courtney and Ashley among numerous professional basketballers. Prince’s agent will be Lindsay Kagawa, who represents Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles, and Seimone Augustus.
Prince had announced her intention to go pro in June after an amazing junior year for Rutgers in which she totaled an eye-popping average line of 19.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game, but the signing on Wednesday means “there’s no turning back now” for Prince.
Native New Yorker Prince first made national sports headlines in the US with an 113 – that’s right one freaking hundred thirteen – point game in high school in 2006 for Manhattan’s Murry Bergtraum High School. Though the move naturally generated some accusations of poor sportsmanship (the final score over Brandeis High was 137-32 and the former record set by Cheryl Miller was 105), Prince seemed modest about the achievement and its ostensibly nefarious overtones: “It was efficient,” she told ESPN. “It wasn’t like I missed a whole bunch of shots. That’s what made it even better.”
After graduating Murry Bergtraum, Prince was welcomed onto a Rutgers team that was developing into a basketball power; those 2006-07 Scarlet Nights would get to the NCAA National Championship Game and Prince contributed 12.2 points and 2.5 steals per game for the season.
Though she reportedly would like to play ball in the WNBA in future, that league’s rules stipulate a player must be 22 before entering the league; Prince is currently 21. According to the New York Times, Prince and Wasserman have not decided upon a destination, but “she is considering Turkey, Russia, Greece and Israel.”
The order of reportage is particularly compelling there, as Prince’s agent-mates Taurasi and Fowles won the 2008-09 Women’s Euroleague championship with Spartak Moscow, while Eurocup MVP Augustus plays with 2008-09 Eurocup champions Galatsaray.
Epiphanny is currently attempting to complete her bachelor’s degree at Rutgers.
