Own a piece of German basketball history for just €150,000

February 11, 2010

You want to give her a Valentine’s Day gift she’ll always remember? Here’s an idea: Spring for the entire grandstand and stadium offices of the Bundesliga Basketball League’s now-defunct Köln 99ers. Forget the dining-room set: These leftovers from Cologne’s hoops team include 3,100 seats and a bonus platform tower (“for technology and media,” we’re told). Bidding starts at just €150,000 on eBay.

For the non-German speakers out there, details regarding the Köln grandstand include:

• Combined headquarters and grandstand; up to 3,100 people allowed for international games comprising a west grandstand with 1,112 seats; eastern stands with 1,070 seats; and north and south grandstands with capacity of 475 each.

• The platform tower is located behind the west grandstand and is 5.0 x 2.4 x 4.5 meters in area.

• The construction was built in 2005, blueprints and appointments to see the location are available upon request. Cost and risk (not to mention logistics) of removal/dismantling, loading and transportation are the responsibility of the buyer.

The Köln team was founded in 1999 and had been sponsored through much of its history by the Rhein Energie power company. When Rhein Energie pulled its sponsorship support after the 2006-07 season, the 99ers quickly found themselves mired in budgetary problems. The league bailed the club out after its first declaration of insolvency in January 2008, but the Energy Men ultimately folded just before the 2009-10 season.

The deadline for bids on the Köln 99ers grandstand at eBay is February 14 at 10.43am CET.

Void were prohibited.

Thanks to Christophe of European Prospects for the tip!
