Sofoklis philosophizes in brief Euroleague interview

May 1, 2010

“Much speech is one thing, well-timed speech is another.” – Sophocles

BallinEurope would be highly remiss if i didn’t turn you onto the Euroleague’s official interview with one of the main men ‘round this ‘site, Sofoklis Schortsanitis.

Somewhat disappointingly, it’s fairly standard stuff, though Big Sofo does offer some insight into stopping the Partizan game, to wit: “Partizan is a young team that likes to run, so we’ll have to be aware of that and control the tempo. Also, they have some good outside shooters that we’ll have to stop.”

“For God hates utterly / The bray of bragging tongues.” – Sophocles, Antigone

On matching up against Slavko Vranes, Schortsanitis expostulates on his philosophy while demonstrating that he may be Shaquillesque on the floor but not in the charming immodesty game: “Basketball is known as a sport that is played in the air, but it is also played on the ground. So being tall is not everything. Being fast, flexible and explosive are also important. I’ll try to use those things against him, and I am sure my coach will find a way to for me to be more effective like that against him.”

The entire interview is running at Euroleague.net. For a sweet video clip of the big man – BiE thought you’d never ask! – see below the break.

Sofoklis and his Olympiacos teammates face off against Aris in the ESAKE playoffs today.

“Rash indeed is he who reckons on the morrow / Or haply on days beyond it / For tomorrow is not, until today is past.” – Sophocles, Trachiniae
