Rumor mills cranking: Childress to Washington? Siskauskas to Madrid? Childress to Atlanta?

June 26, 2010

Déjà vu in 2010-11?

Oh boy, it’s the first big Eurocentric rumor of the 2010-11 season! According to TalkBasket.net and a few other sources, Olympiacos has informed Josh Childress that the club would like him not be to re-up with the Reds in his option year. One wonders if this information was passed on before or after Tuesday’s announcement that Childress had been named to the EΣAKE all-league team.

On Thursday, the Atlanta Hawks put in their qualifying order to Childress, thereby giving him the status of restricted free agent and allowing the Hawks to match any offer made to their one-time forward.

So what will Childress do? The rumors say he’ll be going to the Washington Wizards, actually, who are hot to make an offer for the man. Unless they’re not. But maybe they are.

And the Childress-out-of-Olympiacos gossip has even propagated a little second-generation rumor: Talk Basket and BasketNet.gr are reporting that Olympiacos is looking to advance an offer to Ramunas Sisakauskas, who is leaving CSKA Moscow. Apparently, a second (very) interested party in Ettore Messina’s favorite Lithuanian is Real Madrid.

Wow, those are some big names to be throwing around so early in the offseason, eh? And folks in the ‘States thought their free-agency market was wacky…

Of course, until any of this is really verified, BallinEurope has to consider it conjecture. Interesting conjecture to be sure, but conjecture nonetheless.

    Os,

You might have misunderstood TB’s article. Olympiacos informed Childress that they would like for him to find a new team. They don’t have the option on him. If the option belongs to someone, it is Childress.

If he wishes to leave he can do so, but in case he wishes to stay, the contract will be automatically renewed at July 15th.

It would be great for Olympiacos if they could land Siskauskas to replace Childress. Siska is twice as good and costs half as much.

BTW, since you don’t seem to be aware……..Childress clarified himself that he has the choice only on whether he stays and not the club. As already pointed out, the club has only asked him not to continue due to poor performance but they cannot force this. Childress can still stay simply by taking his player option.

Childress himself stated he will most likely remain in Greece where he will make 5.5 million euros net $7 million dollars net (more than a max NBA contract). He also stated he has not received any offers from the NBA that meet his salary demands, which puts that supposed Wizards offer into serious doubt.

And as I said before, if he does not stay 3 years in Greece he loses his tax write off on US federal taxes for the last 2 years. Regardless of all these US reports saying he for sure would leave Greece, it is at best 50/50 that he would because it makes no sense financially for him to do so.
