A legend returns to Varese for the last time

December 27, 2007

This Thursday night, Gianmarco Pozzecco will play his last game of his career in his former home, the PalaWhirlpool of Varese. This is a good reason to come back a bit on his great career as the “bad boy” PG of Italy.

“Il Pozz” started to play Basketball on a professional level in 1991 in Udine. After a brief season with Livorn, Gianmarco moved to Varese in 1994 where he stayed for 8 years and was a member of the famous roster of the Roosters in 1998/99 together with Jack Galanda, Andrea Meneghin and Daniel Santiago to win the Italian championship.

After some seasons with Fortitudo and two last years with Khimky in Russia, Pozzecco has returned to Italy for a last season in his career at Orlandina Basket in Sicily. Pozzecco was also a member of the Italian NT that won a Silver medal in 2004 at the Olympic games in Athens. Besides being a PG that is know for crazy dribbles, passes and shots, “il Pozz” was also one of the true stars of European Basketball in the last decade because of his theatralic behavior on and off the court. His looks changed lots of times and his nickname “the atomic midge” was also true for his private life where he dated the Italian Volley Ball NT player and model Maurizia Cacciatori.

Now tonight, Pozzecco will play with his team the away game in Varese and he will meet back all his old friend from the Palancanestro Varese team. He explained to the Italian Newspaper Corriere della Sera what this games means to him.

I will return to Varese for the last time as player of basketball: it will be the game of my life. It will not be then therefore hard to enter, I know what I must make, first of all say hello to Nonna Alba, the mother of the Toto Bulgheroni, and then I will have still 40 minutes in order to enjoy Masnago Arena. The drama will be when I will exit the court, knowing that Gianmarco Pozzecco will not walk anymore over that wood.

So for all the lovers of his greatest moments, I did not want to make a choice of the highlight video I wanted to show you. So I have put three of them here that you can enjoy. Good Luck Gianmarco and have a nice game tonight.
