Americans playing overseas

December 3, 2007

It is always interesting to see what professional American players think, when they come to Europe. It is also very interesting to see what their different reasons are to play professional in Europe. Here is an example of University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh graduate (DIII) center Kerry Gibson, who plays professional in Lithuania right now.

Kerry is in his first season for the Lithuanian team Panevezys Techasas with a record of 2-5 (second last). You might think that Kerry is glad to play against Euroleague teams such as Rytas and Kaunas right? Well, not really.

What brought me here was the division of the team. See there are like three divisions of basketball here, 3rd division, 2nd division and 1st division. This is a first division team and they have the best players and best money. Also, it’s the best opportunity to make it to a better team for the next year.

OK, I kind of agree with that but I am not sure if every American player agrees with this:

Anyone who plays in Europe has the goal to play in the Euro League and then the NBA. So starting at a DI team will help with that. I mean there are a lot of great DII teams, but none in Lithuania. If I were to play on a DII team I’d want to be in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Greece and so forth. I hate Lithuania but it’s a start to a career.

Oh oh Kerry – I really hope non of your teams’ fans, managers or even teammates will read this. I also think that playing on a second division team in any of these other countries will give you a shot on playing for a Euroleague team right away.

So Kerry does not like the Basketball in Lithuania at all – well maybe he does like the people, food or other nice things from Lithuania?

I think my biggest adjustment has been the culture. The people in general don’t speak English very well, and English is a universal language. Their food is off the wall, their time [zone] here sucks, and I’m going to bed when you start drinking. Being away from home doesn’t bother me at all. Kind of good to get away from Wisconsin, although I miss Wisconsin because it is the greatest place to live in the world. I miss family and friends of course, but I definitely miss American beer.

Kerry also did some scouting for us in Lithuania:

I am one of the taller guys, but I’ve played against a few 7’6” guys and a few 7’5” guys. And they are as tall as I’ve ever played against, kind of weird not being the tallest. In our league there are probably four guys that are 7’6”.

Can anybody please let me know who these 7’6″ guys are? I mean this like Yao Ming’s playing in Lithuania!

From what i read he thinks that he’s some star, but lokk at his stats:
in lithuanian league he plays 17 minutes and scores 3,6 pts and grabs 4 rebounds..
in bbl challenge cup (the worst one with weaker baltic clubs) he’s little bit better with 4 pts and 9 rebounds, but still..
And i heard coach isn’t very happy about his prformance, so maby he will be fired, then he could go where ever he wants…

he was rumoured to be fired right from the beginning when he came to Panevezys. Coach wasn’t satisfied with his stamina and only the fact that he is 7 footer is keeping him in that team. the statement about four guys 7’6” (228 cm if I’m right) is just ridiculous. there is Sergo Atuashvili, Georgian, who is 223 cm but he barely plays. then Eurelijus Zukauskas, 216 cm and Michail Anisimov, 214.

i guess after few bottles of Lithuanian beer Kerry sees everything in his own scale.

I was wondering if Kerry was completely drunk when he made this interview?
He’s playing in Lithuanian League, which is very weak in European context. However he’s not too good even here (i think 3,6 points, not 6 in average).
He would be very surprised to know that most of continental Europe’s timezones are very similar (a difference is only in 1 – 3 hours). So i guess that whole Europe would “suck”.
And Lithuania’s native language is lithuanian. But most people also can speak russian. Some can also speak polish, english (most young people), german, spanish or french. Still not everyone is english-spoken here.
By the way – although Lithuania is poor country (comparing to USA), we still got the internet and know what crap You have told bout our country.

Whoever wrote this article about Kerry, took it way out of context. Kerry did this interview for a friend at his college newspaper. So if anyone found it, it just means they wrote about someone else’s story in a different light. It wasn’t meant to offend, he was just being honest about his experience.

As far as his point average, it’s hard when your coach already hates you and plays you 6 minutes a game. 3 points in 6 minutes doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

He was asked to play in Lithuania, not the other way around. If he doesn’t like it, fine… don’t chastise him for it…

First of all, this blog is ridiculous… not only can’t you spell anything right, but you’re putting words in his mouth. Not ONCE did Kerry say he didn’t like basketball there, he’s saying the opponents aren’t very good. That doesn’t say anything bad about his team. You can’t tell me that any other player that walks on the court doesn’t have it in for the opponent…it’s ridiculous to even say that. Oshkosh is behind Kerry Gibson… enough said.

I have no problem taking these comments, if I would have written all these things but actually it was this site: http://www.advancetitan.com/story.aspx?s=6698
and Greg Koch who wrote this. So I think you should talk to atitan@uwosh.edu which is stated under the article if you have questions as it says.

No… the FIRST article was taken out of context from a SCHOOL newspaper… way to check your sources… so you shouldn’t have a problem taking these comments. It’s with two “m’s” by the way….

Hey gang. I am the guy who did this Q&A with Kerry. I am Greg Koch, the sports editor for the Advance-Titan in Oshkosh. If you have any questions or concerns just email me. I want to start out by saying this blog is definitely taking this article out of context, but since you didn’t know what context it was written in, I totally understand. See, Kerry and I are friends. We have a very loose relationship. We joke around about a bunch of things hardly ever meaning the truth. Kerry doesn’t hate Lithuania, he just misses Wisconsin. He was trying to get his point across that he loves it back home and misses it here.

You can see that in the part where he says he is going to bed when we start drinking. Although, maybe he shouldn’t have answered his questions so loosely (which i encouraged him to do), he by no means hates Lithuania. If you knew Kerry, and you read that part where he talks about us drinking when he is sleeping, then you realize a lot of this Q&A is done in jest by him.

Also, we did this interview over email. I can’t afford a phone call to him, as I am a lowly college student. I had no opportunity to hear the tone of his voice, see his facial expressions or hear his laughs. I understand talking down another’s country is disrespectful, but please everybody, believe me. Kerry did not mean it the way it was printed.

So finally, put yourself in his shoes. Have you ever had a job where you want to improve upon and get a promotion or have you stayed happy and content at the same job you have had your entire life? That is the point he is trying to get across in the part where he says he wants to play in other leagues. Also, has anybody ever said something and written it down and said ‘Gosh, that doesnt sound the way I meant it to sound?’

Sure you have, we all have. Don’t pin Kerry on the cross because of this simple Q&A, he loves basketball, he loves his job and he loves the situation he is in. That is all that should matter and all you need to know.

Please email me if you have any questions or anything, Kerry doesn’t deserve this.

For all You who tries to defend Kerry Grant i would like to remind that a person should feel responsibility for his words. He’s not a child, or is he? He’s not an ordinary guy from college. He’s a professional basketball player playing in Lithuania. That makes difference!

There is nothing wrong with the freedom of speech, but You should think well what to say. If someone tells that he hates, for example, black people, or Jews, or Muslims we call it racism, antisemitism, etc… And definitely not freedom of speech.

Greg Koch, don’t know if You’ve got the news, but Your already famous interview brought serious troubles for Kerry. He claims that most of his words in the interview were violent interpretation. “I didn’t say that”… Yep yep, sure You didn’t… Anyway someone is busted here.

And whose stories about Kerry playing against mystical bigfoots?

P.S. I would also like to remind Kerry Grant and some commentators (with two m’s) that not everyone in the World is English-spoken

I’m Kerry Gibson’s mom and would like to respond to the article that has caused hurt for alot of people. I’m not one for the internet or blog pages, I think people say negative things too often on these sites. But I know Kerry better than most and know how he thinks. Anyone who knows Kerry is aware that he has a very dry sense of humor and is a fun-loving kid. He means harm to no one and cares about people in general. For the country of Lithuania – he loves basketball, is he an NBA prospect? No. But he loves the game and wants to continue playing. Did he mean to insult your country or other players – No. I’m sure he is somewhat homesick, but he has never indicated in any way to us that he hates Lithuania. He has only told us how much he is enjoying this experience to play ball overseas. Were his quotes in this article taken out of context – yes! He feels regret for how this came about and meant to insult no one. He has learned a hard lesson that the media doesn’t always correctly portray what is said or done. That has been proven many times over in the past. This reporter did not recognize the power of the internet and what harm can be done when not fully interviewing his sources and interpreting what he thought Kerry meant. For all in Lithuania, please accept our sincere apologies for this incident and be sure Kerry knows what hurt this has caused. Thank you if you can find it in your heart to understand and accept his apology.

To everyone that has a problem with Kerry, get a life. He was with one of his best friends from college, getting silly questions and giving silly answers. Kerry always puts a spin on things to make people laugh. Even if it is a reporter. Kerry Gibson not Grant is a fun loving person that does not take life seroiusly and I think a lot more people should take that advice.
Kerry is one of the best defensive big men that you will ever find. Has great timing for blocking shots and gets that important steal in the game with his quick hands.
Offensively he has a soft touch, great free throw shooter and is one of the best shooters on the team no matter which team he is on. The one thing he does lack is his confidence which most coaches do not understand. Especially this last horrible coach in LIthuania. Just because you are a coach does not mean you know how to coach or even should be coaching in the first place. Most times coach’s get the job because they know somebody or they are so called important.
For everyone that still has a problem get a clue, a life, and a friend because you probably don’t have any of them you losers!
