Betting on basketball: What will Ricky do?

September 6, 2009

Paddy Power, ever priding itself on its status as “the cheeky bookmaker,” is offering (through tomorrow only!) some neat little proposition bets for Eurobasket 2009 based on everyone’s favorite Minnesota un-Timberwolf. Cleverly titled the “Ricky Rubio Specials,” the Paddy asks you to punt on the young stud’s performance in the big tournament.

The slate of possible bets looks like so:

Ricky Rubio to play in a game and score zero points: 4/6
Ricky Rubio to be tournament steals leader: 6/4
Ricky Rubio to be top scorer on Team Spain: 33/1
Ricky Rubio to be named tournament MVP: 40/1
Ricky Rubio to be top scorer in tournament: 1,000/1

Are any of these worth a pound or two in speculation? Sure! That “tournament steals leader” punt looks like quite the decent bet at 6/4, though Monsieur Parker and a few others may have something to say about that.

Otherwise, well … you’d have to have drunk quite a bit of the Rubio-sponsored Gatorade to start buying him as top scorer for Spain (giggle) or top scorer in the tournament (guffaw). And even though observers might ultimately find him to have been the actual Eurobasket 2009 MVP after the young one is the tournament steals leader and finishes top-two or -three in assists, if Spain’s in the championship, it’s Pau Gasol for MVP. Or someone not on Team Spain.

Which leaves the question of a zero-pointer. Why the 4/6 line? Does the Paddy really reckon on a game in which Rubio doesn’t once get the open shot? Tell you what: The bombastic, hyperbolic reaction from US media would be fantastic. How about this prop bet: “Ricky Rubio zero-point game in Eurobasket 2009 to be top story on ESPN Sportscenter: 2/1”?
