BiE’s coffee guy worried about World Cup impact on business

BallinEurope is a full-time passion but not a full-time job. Our editor, Emmet Ryan, is off to Bilbao for the 2014 FIBA World Cup but the guy who runs the coffee shop next door to his day job is worried about the impact Emmet’s absence will have on business.

Last night I left my desk in the Sunday Business Post for the last time before my holidays and it caught Karl Purdy, who run the coffee shop next door, by surprise when I posted a temporary farewell from my personal account.

Left the office. I won't see it again until 16 September… getting oh so close to BASKETBALL CHRISTMAS

@action81 Whaaaaa! What will we do with ya?

— coffeeangel (@coffeeangel) August 28, 2014

I’m in Karl’s shop roughly four times a day and, well, he’s not sure how he’s going to cope. I had previously warned him by asking about cafes in Bilbao, Barcelona, and Madrid.

@coffeeangel why do you think I was asking for cafes?

— Emmet Ryan (@action81) August 28, 2014

@action81 Got that… but Sept 16th? Sure there's be shorter lunar missions.

493x80

@coffeeangel I'm on a more important mission

— Emmet Ryan (@action81) August 28, 2014

That was when Karl really didn’t know what to do.

@action81 Looks like we'll need to start cutting staff hrs given ur absence & inevitable drop in turnover (-;

— coffeeangel (@coffeeangel) August 28, 2014

@coffeeangel I'm putting your kids through college

— Emmet Ryan (@action81) August 28, 2014

In fairness, I spend around €50 in his shop per week, he probably needs to redress the balance.

@action81 she's 2 young 2 appreciate that truth. But u have my undying gratitude… now hurry back!

— coffeeangel (@coffeeangel) August 28, 2014

Fear not Karl, I’ll be sure to direct any hoop heads visiting Dublin your way.
