Eurobasket 2011: BallinEurope podcasts, makes Official Fearless Predictions™

August 29, 2011

As BallinEurope gets ready to hit the road for Lithuania – Panevezys, specifically, where BiE’ll be covering EuroBasket Group A action – there’s just enough time for a shameless plug and Official Fearless Predictions™.

Last week, BiE guested on podcasts with the indomitable Freaknick over at the always fun and insightful Euroleague Adventures. We spent more than enough time going over each of the groups and expounded on various related (and not necessarily so related) topics related to EuroBasket 2011, so links are provided for when you want to kill a little have some time to listen in.

Group A – Perhaps the easiest group to forecast, this bunch has three obvious monsters now that Team Turkey seems to be coming together after some initial identity-searching. In the podcast, we debate whether FIBA is sending a message that the wants of a few dozen business interests in the U.S. outweigh the needs of certain fledgling national basketball programs now forced to perform without their keystone players thanks to multi-million dollar insurance issues. The sole EuroBasket-related question for BiE comes in the Spain-Lithuania match, to wit: Can the homecourt advantage will the hosts to victory and a possible 5-0 mark going into round two? Sure. Official BallinEurope Fearless Prediction™ of order of finish: Lithuania, Spain, Turkey.

Could Benzing be the difference-maker?

Group B – BiE has already taken some flack for suggesting that either Serbia or Italy will not advance out of this group, but France looks great and Germany is no longer a one-man show with the burgeoning Tibor Pleiss and Robin Benzing ready for international prime time. And in the Euroleague Adventures podcast, BiE takes some hits for his already outdated Eurobasket Power Rankings. Official BallinEurope Fearless Prediction™: France, Serbia, Germany.

Ah, what to make of Group C? After the pair of traditional powers heading up this group, who wins the dogfight among Montenegro, Macedonia and Bosnia & Herzegovina? Podcast-wise, listen in for a rant from yours truly regarding the crazy 24-team field in this tournament; seriously, do you realize there were 49 federations under consideration by FIBA for this thing? Do you recall who the last team eliminated was? And seriously, half The Continent gets to play for all the marbles? Or at least pretend to… Official BallinEurope Fearless Prediction™: Greece, Croatia, Macedonia. Why Macedonia? Why not? Bo knows international ball! (Though Freaknick makes a strong case for Montenegro’s advancement.)

Group D – Might Georgia and the currently red hot Zaza Pachulia be the most compelling team in the first round? If you’re seeking upsets in a mostly top-heavy tournament, these might be your guys. Also touched upon in the Euroleague Adventures podcast: The difficult question of naturalization. Where does one draw the line vis-à-vis passports for international play? While few would debate now-retired longtime CSKA Moscow stud J.R. Holden’s dedication to Team Russia, should Serge Ibaka really be playing for Spain when so many prospects could fill the 12th spot? Should Bo McCalebb be representing a country he’s never lived in? And then there’s Chris Kaman, suiting up for coach Dirk Bauermann, who has fought for years to improve the German situation domestically … what’s your take? Official BallinEurope Fearless Prediction™: Russia, Slovenia, Georgia.

Enjoy the tournament, and BiE’ll be reporting from the great basketball state of Lithuania soon!

anton, this a basketball portal! not a political one for those who appear to be very narrow minded. I was born and lived in Greece but since you insist, the country’s name (outside of Greece) is MACEDONIA. Because you have been taught (or not) very inaccurate history, it does not mean that your false knowledge of historical facts should be imposed on others. Open up your mind a bit and grow up. The name was, is and will remain Macedonia whether you like it or not. My apologies to genuine basketball fans.

The name is like the original answerer suggested, FYROM Macedonia. You fools need to create your own history not steel ours. We have spilt lots of blood to maintain our borders and people. Macedonia is a province in Greece, i am Macedonian but i am Greek!!
      Go FIBA!!!!!

I do not think that Lithuania will go that far in Group A either Spain or Turkey will beat them. Without Kleiza it is really hard for them to actually win over a really strong Spain and a decent Turkey. As matter of the fact Turkey is showing some promise in their recent matches and all of their Bigs seem to find their game especially Enes Kanter.
I do not know what to say about Spain their coaching is good their roster is like a dream team.
Lithuania on the other hand did not play well against Slovenia and if they play like that against Turkey or Spain they might end up being 3rd.

I think Lithuania will surprise alot of people, and finish ahead of Spain in there group. Homecourt is a big advantage, and when you have a good team there is no greater chemistry for success. Look what it did for Turkey in the Worlds last year!!!

Turkey is extremely overrated. They were second in 2010 strictly due to the refs because they wanted USA against the home team in the final. That was why both USA and Turkey were given 80-20 favored reffing in every game until the final where USA was given special treatment.

FIBA even switched which brackets the teams were in right before the tournament to make sure they aligned opposite each other. So strange how no one seemed to even notice that though.

Now, Turkey is not at home, so they will do no better than the level of their players. Which means quarterfinals and nothing more.

Now, Lithuania is at home and they will get the 80/20 special treatment in all games. Most likely FIBA plans on a Spain-Lithuania final and will do everything in their power to ensure the refs make it happen.

However, Lithuania will not be so gracious as to have negative reffing against them in the final as Turkey was when the USA was given special treatment in the 2010 final.

Therefore, expect at least somewhat even reffing until the last minutes of the game. Either way FIBA gets what they want, and plays their script exactly as NBA lord master Stern wants them to. Lithuania in the final and/or winning at home, and Spain directly to the Olympics as a top pot seed, which then can align them perfectly to face USA in the final in 2012.

Which will also be ensured as both USA and Spain will get special treatment from the refs all the way to the 2012 Olympic final. Then, of course, the USA will be gifted the gold medal by the refs, just like they were in 2008.

    The end

Man what a bitter person Basketball Nostradamus must be. What do you think, he is a fan of Serbia? Greece perhaps? Anyway my question to you Basketball Nostradamus is why are you even on this site? If you really believe all of FIBA is fixed and the results are all predetermined (which is perfectly fine you can believe whatever you want) why even watch the games and read online articles and post comments. Go watch soccer, or swimming or watch TV show or do anything with your life instead of wasting your time reading and posting comments on a competition you believe is fixed.
I just have a nagging suspicion that if the team your rooting for wins gold all of a sudden it will not be because of special treatment by the refs but because “they earned it”. lol 🙂

by your logic, in every euro or world cup the home team is either the winner or the runner up… please check if that’s the case before making any bold predictions (or idiotic comments) then shut the fcuk up..

    To Anton et al.

If Macedon attacked Turkey from behind would Greece help?

If you don’t get the joke, sucks to be you then

My name is James, but the Greeks I known call me Dimitris, on the basis they think that is my name in Greek.

I don’t mean to be rude but JAMES is spelled and pronounced differently, maybe this is your problem Anton? Maybe FYROM is spelled and pronounced MACEDONIA in Greece LOL

ok nigga..you can make any joke you want
no ..if Monkeydonia attack to turkey greece i think want help, in case to avoid further disorder in the area..but come down to earth..fyrom is only 2 million people..what could they do against turkey?? Get a life..
if you want to call fyrom as macedonia, this is you problem as an uneducated person you are..Consider only that the names Alexander and Macedonia are Greek and i can tell you their meaning…Alexander my friend is a combo word .Alex in greek means “shield” and ander means “man”. Macedonia comes from the word Makednos which means a man that lives in an area with high mountains..(northern greece..the real Macedonia) or generally means something that is high or tall..this is the greek language my friend..one of the oldest language in the world…now tell me what does Alexander and Macedonia mean in a slavic language….poor boy..learn some history…
