Eurobasket 2011: Scenarios for round three

September 10, 2011

With one game left to play for the teams of Group E and two for Group F in the 2011 FIBA EuroBasket tournament, BallinEurope takes a brief look at some of the mathematical possibilities for advancement into the knockout stage.

Group E
• France and Spain have clinched the top two spots in the group; their game tomorrow night will determine which is which seed.

• Lithuania gets the no. 3 seed with a win over Germany on Sunday. In this case, the Group E no. 4 seed would be determined with the outcome of the Turkey-Serbia game (by the way, nice grudge match there, eh?): Winner takes the last ticket to advance. Should Lithuania lose to Germany, there will be one of those messy multi-team ties for third and fourth spot, which would shake out something like the following.

• If Lithuania loses to Germany and Serbia beats Turkey the three-way tie of Lithuania, Germany and Serbia would go down to points, with head-to-head-to-head records all at 1-1. Currently, that differential is Lithuania, +10; Serbia, +1; Germany, minus-11 – meaning Germany needs to win huge and that, even with a loss plus a Serbia win, Lithuania could back into the no. 3 seed.

• If Lithuania loses to Germany and Turkey wins over Serbia, the three-way tie would end with head-to-head-to-head records of Germany, 2-0; Lithuania, 1-1; and Turkey, 0-2, putting Germany into the Group E no. 3 seed for the tournament round, with Lithuania at no. 4.

Group F
• The loser of tonight’s Finland-Georgia match is eliminated from the tournament.

• Russia and FYR Macedonia (yes) have clinched spots in the second round. If Russia wins over Greece and Macedonia beats Slovenia, the top two spots in the group would be determined by the Russia-Macedonia match on Monday night.

• FYR Macedonia will finish no. 1 with two more wins; no. 2 with a win against Slovenia and a loss to Russia; no. 3 in the case of a three-way tie between Russia, Greece and themselves and point-differential tiebreakers; and no. 4 if they lose out.

• Russia’s case is a bit different from FYR Macedonia’s, as Russia can go into the next round with no worse than a no. 3 seed: Russia finishes first in the group with two wins, second with a 1-1 record regardless of which result ensues, and third by losing out.

• If Greece beats Russia tonight, they’ve clinched a top-three spot in the group. A subsequent win in their game five against Georgia equals the top seed, with the no. 2 and no. 3 spots to be determined by the Russia-FYR Macedonia game.

• Slovenia is in with two wins (against FYR Macedonia and Finland). If Greece wins one more game, Slovenia gets the no. 4 seed, while an 0-2 Greek finish would put Slovenia in at no. 3 from Group F.

• If Slovenia loses tonight and Finland bests Georgia, the no. 4 spot would be filled by the winner of Monday night’s Slovenia-Finland matchup.

• Finland and Georgia are both mathematically alive, but either side would have to win out before any discussion of such a Cinderella story began.

• Under these conditions, a Greece/Slovenia/Finland three-way tie would result in records of Greece, 2-0; Finland, 1-1; Slovenia, 1-1, and Finland sneaks in with the no. 4 seed and the “privilege” of playing either France or Spain. With Georgia winning out, a Greece/Slovenia/Georgia tiebreaker would put all three teams at 1-1 and the tiebreaker going down to the point differential – imagine Greece eliminated and Georgia advancing … BiE’s head is ready to explode.

• Finally, Official BallinEurope Fearless Predictions™ for the third round: Spain vs. Slovenia; Macedonia vs. Lithuania; France vs. Greece; Russia vs. Serbia or Turkey … and if you think BiE’s picking the winner of that one, well, let’s just say we ain’t that fearless.

Now things look great for Lithuania. Unless Germany brings up some kind of miracle, or Russia loses intentionally to FYROM (though not long ago David Blatt was the one to complain about the unfair game of Greece, http://euroleagueadventures.com/the-pathetic-art-of-tanking ), we’ll face the Makedoncis in the quarters 🙂 Certainly not the scariest opponent from group F…

“Macedonia-Certainly not the scariest opponent from group F”!!!!!
Do you know that only Macedonia and Russia are undefeated in group F?
Do you know that Macedonia have 6 wins in a row?
Do you know that Macedonia finished at 1st place in the first round and curently is 1st in group F?
So I have to correct you:
Certainly, Macedonia is the scariest opponent from group F

Well, they certainly had a few good games (against Greece it’s understandable coz of politics, against Slovenia that played really badly on that day), but on the paper they are not that strong, not comparable to Russia, France, Spain… If Lithuania keeps the usual high tempo to get few FYROM leaders tired and if our shooting is not as hopeless as yesterday against France, I think the outcome is pretty clear.

MACEDONIA was great on ALL of the games. greece is very bad for very long time, and got owned by the Macedonian players, the current politic situation is not an excuse and they are not affected by it in anyway, they are all professionals and their standards and needs are fulfilled. Paper? What paper? Have u seen any of the games going out like it was by the papers? Lithuanians current game pace is much slower than Macedonian one, and the shooting will be as much as the opponents let you to shoot, and the outcome is not clear at all. I don’t know where are you looking but from what we can see all you can see is false… maybe in your eyes Hungary are finalists, aye?

From our (serbian) perspective, the situation is quite simple: beat turkey to go through… After that, we should cheer for France to beat Spain cause then we might play France in the semis and you know what happened in our group stage clash… we are eager to finish what we started. And on Monday, we hope FYROM beats Russia, so we could play them. Turkey – FYROM – France… that’s what i think will happen… and realistically, now when there’s no room for fooling around, we’ll play much better and maybe even pull all three… even if it’s Turkey – Russia – France (or Spain), there’s no reason to think we can’t beat at least first two. The Turks owe us from last year, and we’re ready to collect the debt! I just can’t see us losing to them, no way… if that happens, Serbs will put a lock on basketball courts next 10 to 15 years… 😉

If Russians show their normal effort, they should beat FYROM by double digits, so I guess it will rather be Russia-Serbia(or Turkey).
Rane, see – everybody wants to meet your team in the quarters 🙂 You are wrong about me not seeing them play – I think that other games, like -5 vs. Montenegro, +2 vs. Croatia, +2 vs. Finland and +2 vs. Georgia better reflect its actual level. Though certainly it’s an opponent to respect, but whoever they play in the quarters they’ll be the underdogs… (so by betting on FYROM you’d win a lot of money in case of the victory…)

G like the odds this morning Slovenia was outright favourite and Macedonia was paying $3.15 for the win and Slovenia $1.75. Now we all know how that went. Bring it on!!!Macedonia all the way…

Yeah, but you have to admit that Slovenia doesn’t normally shoot 4/23 from behind the arc, mostly from good positions… It’s like the Lithuania-France game, where so many of our relatively easy shots, even from a few meters, dropped out (we think it’s because of the goddamn crab that predicted France would win… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRNrvgC9n2Q – so far the crab is 7-0 with its predictions…) Anyway, if you were betting for Macedonia since the beginning you must be rich by now 😉 So keep going 🙂

Despite questionable calls that went Slovenia’s way, its offense remained in disarray and disjointed. During the 4th quarter the Maco’s lead by 17 points. At the end Macedonia was able to finish the job with relative ease during the remainder of the game, despite the loss of their influential big man Pere Antic. We are gaining in confidence and with a bit of luck who knows what may come. One thing is for sure though never underestimate your opponent like Greece did…lol
One way or another the best team will win on the day so good luck to all. Cheers to a great tournament. Vas

If we were to look at it on paper Rep Macedonia has lot less known players compared to other teams and yeah we can compare them to the Greece or the Croatia or the Montenegro Slovenia all power house in there in there own rite just look at their accomplishments but from what i know from the sport of Basketball that it is a team sport and individuals no matter how good wont win you a game or even a tournament example NBA final Dallas Mavericks v Miami Heat and i know its a far of but that championship was won on team chemistry not Individuals ….. anyways point is it is a championship and anything can happen and that is what its like in todays sport simply because teams get underestimated, and there are certian teams that have that team chemistry and that will win you any game quote URBAN CHEMISTRY….” Only within those shadows, lurks a team I truly feel are capable of big things in this tournament. I could be wrong and hope my confidence doesn’t jinx them but F.Y.R. of Macedonia has something truly special which many coaches would give their right arm for.
    They possess an uber-chemistry.”

Vas, you got something to say? E >> F… Spain vs Slovenia (probably), France vs Greece, Serbia v Russia (probably) and Lithuania vs FYROM. All 4 group E teams will advance… so, relax, it’s all good for you but we had to beat Turkey and we did it. Unfortunately i can’t see us beating Spain in the semis, but that doesn’t mean we won’t try our best.

I wouldn’t look past Russia. Out of all groups E teams Russia has the best chance of advancing. I would even say they would be favored to advance.

Yeah, so far Russia looks better than Serbia, I guess they’ll be the favorites, while in other matches it will be the Group E teams. Though I guess it will be hard for France against Greece after their regretable performance in the game vs. Spain – another reason other than Zouros being Zalgiris coach for 15k fans to support Greece 🙂

me, cocky? wow, i’m speechless. i’m not going to argue about basketball with a guy from FYROM… if you were lithuanian or greek or spanish, yeah we have something to talk about… but you’re being a dump optimist for no reason at all… FIBA Europe made a huge mistake this year… group F simply sucks! and i have nothing to say to you, just relax and wait QF stage… you’ll see that i’m right.

wow, what a game… Not sure if Monya actually wanted to make that shot coz otherwise one couldn’t say that from the way Russians played most of the match. But in the end God helped Lithuania, now we face demoralized Macedonians who hopefully won’t shoot 3 pointers with such percentage as today (though one can attribute that to lack of Russian defense).

oh what just happened another win for Macedonia 🙂 67-65 but hey here’s another article from a person that knows about basketball 🙂
I guess Russian Coach David Blatt had already predicted the outcome

But i guess words are no match for results so lets just look at the result 🙂 and haters well keep on hating you have the right to do so while others that actually know something about the game say otherwise :)….. and as expected there will be no due respect or anything like that from anyone other then people that know about the game 🙂
    STILL A SWEET VICTORY 🙂

Lithuania didn’t lose to FYROM. It lost to itself and to the Slovenian referee. We totally can’t understand how that guy who for 2 previous times in the group stages showed clear animosity towards our team was allowed to ref in the quarterfinal. Maybe because we were too confident that there was no chance to lose. Even after 2nd and 3rd quarter all commentators said that “however bad the referee is, based on the level difference and on how tired FYROM players were, Lithuania should drive through them like with a truck or a tank”. However, they also said that we should pass our ball to big guys and let them play aggresively in the paint to make Antic get 5th personal, etc. Everybody was saying that, only the team didn’t hear – we don’t know why. Maybe there was some bad chemistry. Some say that Kemzura can’t manage the old players well. Others said that Jasikevicius tried to speak instead of him during timeouts. We will see in the future what was actually the case…

You FYROM fans, have your brief moment of fame. We’re not jealous at all. Haters? There were a lot of haters towards Lithuania. Especially from Russian media and commentators who used every opportunity to say how crappy our team and our country in general is as well as how stupid our fans are. We’ll definitely remember that and never forget. I can see that they are so jealous, as they can’t imagine how their “great derzhava” didn’t win anything at all in the Olympics, while small Lithuania with our ability and love for basketball didn’t only qualify for 5 consecutive Olympics but also reached the top-4 in each of them. They despised when Americans were glad to cooperate in making the movie “the other dream team”.

Now it’s basically the 9/11 moment of Lithuania (like in 2005 it probably was for Serbia). Especially if we lose today to Slovenia. The new big Kaunas arena will be a ghost house during the semis and the finals, probably to the great Schadenfreude of the Slovenian referee. We did a lot of mistakes in mixing the championship with politics and providing too strong pressure from media that we must win and we will win. But even more so, this will likely send the whole country whose morale and whole economy was so much dependent on basketball into recession or even depression. Hopefully this will cause some reflection among us and eventually will be for the better… But all haters among you should rest assured that Olympic basketball tournament without tens of thousands of Lithuanian fans that would definitely come would be an order of magnitude more boring.

Hi Lithuanina fan… why dont you just say that you are Greek. None else calls us FYROM but our southern neighbours.

Macedonia won fare and square, and lets not talk about the referees and about the two fouls at the end of the game that they never gave Macedonia. The Slovenian referee even took break, trying to find excuses not to give Macedonia that final foul against Ilievski.

But you have the right to be a sore looser, Greece got beaten like noone else. Macedonia schooled ya 🙂

    Stay strong MACEDONIA!!!

No I’m not Greek. You are called FYROM officially by UN, by Eurobasket and by quite a lot of countries, that’s why I used it – otherwise I don’t care about this issue (though for truth’s sake see Wikipedia – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macedonia – your country is just a small northwestern part of this region)

Congratulations to Lithuania for winning a ticket to Olympic qualifiers – you guys really showed character, I didn’t believe that you’ll be able to recover psychologically. Next year we’ll come back with Kleiza, Maciulis, better Valanciunas, without too much pressure, and will hopefully repeat the history of last 5 Olympics.

No 132 countries, from which USA, China, England, etc… has recognized us as Macedonia.
I have some friends from Lithuania at work and they have no problems calling us Macedonian’s. If you listen to the Preview video Macedonia vs Lithuania form Eurobasket 2011, you can see that the Lithuanian play-maker is referring to the Macedonian team as Macedonia and Macedonians, so since you have issues with the Macedonian name I can say that yes you are Greek my friend… and you probably are coming from northern Greece, because I also have friends from Athens and they have no problems calling me Macedonian.

hrr.. OK, I can call you Macedonian, wtf – I’m NOT Greek. I would have called you before, if you guys were a bit less arrogant in your comments. But anyway, see you next year in the Olympic qualification 🙂 If you had a small chance against Lithuania (and Greece, Slovenia, Croatia), which you succeeded to use out of your extreme enthusiasm and because these teams did not take you seriously (whatever they said in public), against Spain you unfortunately have no chance at all… Nevertheless, good luck.

Put away politics and whole referee debate because we all know that in what ever championship there will always be that and more so towards the smaller known countries compared to the power houses ….. the only thing that really shits me is that not one person has given the credit or just said well done or anything of sorts all ive heard is one man team, not good enough offense not well known statistically not that great bad shooting percentage or whatever the case, and yeah statistics play a big part but statistics go out the window once u get on the court and start playing and u stick to your game plan …. no sportsmanship award for anyone i guess ” sarcasm” …. And lithuanian FAN i was and still am a fan of lithuania watched their players play even before they got on the map as a independent country from the former soviet union when as a the USSR Arvydis Sabonis scored a few three pointers to beat Yugoslavia at the time …. but thats a whole different story …. and no its not arrogants and maybe this will be a once in a lifetime maybe not never know but for now at least its reality
