European basketball in just ONE word

January 25, 2008

I am very fortunate to be on an email list with the best bloggers in the US. From time to time a person has an issue and it will be discussed within that group. Maybe this email list will one day develop into a basketball blogger summit – who knows.
The other day I thought: “I really wonder what all these great bloggers really think of ‘Ball in Europe'” so I just asked them.
I never expected such a huge response and I am really thankful for every single word that was sent to me. Well, I asked those guys to describe basketball in Europe with just one word. Here is every single word I got so far. Careful – you  probably will laugh out loud!

DIVERSE (LOY’s Place)
GROWING (nuggdoctor)
UNDERAPPRECIATED (empty the bench)
SHOOTERIFIC (hoopsaddict.com)
EUROPEAN (National Lampoon’s Sports Minute (or so))
SerbianGangsters (Both Teams Played Hard)
MISSUNDERSTOOD (the crossover movement)
BALONCESTO (Four-Point Play)
RAMBUNCTIOUS (Raptors HQ)
SMOKY (RedsArmy)
HAIR! (Vlade has a posse)
FUNDAMENTAL (SportsBiz)
JIRI (The Basketball Jones)
EUROPEAN (SacTown Royalty)
KOBE (SLAMonline)
CHEERLEADERLESS (Hornets247)
TAX-FREE (TrueHoop)
TRAPEZOID (Indy Cornrows)
FOREIGN
(TWolvesBlog)
NECK-BEARD aka BACKBEARD (straight bangin + D.C. Sports Bog)
Olé! (TheHype)
POTENTIAL (Phoenix Suns Rising)
HAIRGEL (Posting and Toasting)
PERIMETER (hoopsaddict)
Cartersnutsonweis’head. (ProBasketball.About.com)
€ (hoopsaddict)

To make it short, this is how European basketball was described:

BALONCESTO: A underappreciated and missunderstood European game, played by shooterific SerbianGangsters (+Kobe). Most of the smoking players in this growing game use hair gel, are neck and back bearded but do have potential because of their fundamentals. The “€” is tax free while the most rambunctious play was when Cartersnuts(were)onweis’head – unfortunately: cheerleaderless. Olé!

That summary is a thing of beauty that will be a joy forever. My man John Keats said that..John Keats, that’s my man…you know that right?

I like the summary too, too.

I said “baloncesto” (Spanish for basketball) as an homage to José Calderón. Where would the Raptors be without him?
