FIBA Eurocup Preview: Tartu Rock

April 16, 2008

So the first team we are talking about is the Estonian squad from Tartu Rock. For the team of head coach Ullar Kerde, it is the first ever participation in a European Final phase. We will check a bit what are the main forces of the team and why they can eventually go for it all.

The team is led by two very interesting young player in the person of Georgian Draft eligible PG Giorgi Tsintsadze and Harvard Alumni Brian Cusworth. Cusworth, a seven footer is the first inside scoring option of the team and was a FIBA Eurocup All-Star this year. He gave also one of the famous FIBA Interviews during his time at the pool so he probably knows already how it will be in the Mediterranean island.

He is supported by the talented PG Tsintsadze who is more of a scorer as he leads the team in that area. But he has already a fairly correct number of assists this season as he averages 5.2 dimes per game. He is actively supported in the back court by the veteran shooter Gerd Kullamäe who comes up with the most incredible shooting stats I have ever seen. He took only 12 shots from 2 point area but 73 from behind the arc in the whole FIBA Eurocup. Does anybody know any other player with this shooting setup?

For the Estonian players, the quarter finals against Ural Great Perm were probably their best ever basketball experience in their life. And if you check the nice plays they put on the court in their arena against the Russian millionaires, you will understand that you can not underestimate this team, even if it comes from a nation that is not known for their regular presence at the highest level.
