France wants the FIBA World Championships 2014

February 9, 2008

After we talked already about the Spanish federation wanting to get the 2014 Basketball World Championships, there is now a second nation that comes up with the wish to get this event. France.

According to a FIBA.com announcement this week, France is the second candidate to organize the World Championships in 2014. The FFBB had already tried to get this even in 2010, the year where its generation of TP, Boris Diaw and the Pietrus brothers would be at their prime but the vote went in favor of Turkey. Now the people around the very disputed and criticized Yvan Mainini and Jean-Pierre de Vicenzi try to get to event to France in 2014.

In a time when the actual top performers will probably not be present with the National Team anymore, this can now already be considered as the Nicolas Batum generation tournament. Spain is hoping on the same effect as Ricky Rubio will be 24 in 2014 and so probably at his top level. Now I was somehow suprised by the reactions in France about this announcement.

While the French federation is not even announcing this news on their official website, one of the most popular French discussion boards is also pretty quiet around this possibility to see the World’s best basketballers in France. One forum just has the announcement without any reaction but a nasty comment of the poster (We will probably finally organize something… maybe the the European Championship for Division B) while the other one has exactly three replies…

Good luck France, it looks like the people are really happy if this will happen. At least they can be happier than the Germans as they did not even try to organize some tournament during the time where Dirk Nowitzki was playing with the National team.
