Gate 13 – Panathinaikos hardcore basketball fans

October 26, 2007

Again I must talk about my experience in Athens at the Final Four 2007. I was sitting in the gym, when nobody was there just enjoying being in this arena about 5 hours prior the games. This is truly an arena as you would have thought about it 2000 years ago when the gladiators were fighting in Rom’s Colosseum.

I have seen some really cool movies about Rome and it’s 100 days remaining games.

You really could transform this to Athens. We still have the gladiators, who would be the players and the crazy fans that celebrate this event like it would be the last one.

As I entered the gym again, when Panathinaikos was playing CSKA in the Euroleague Final it started to fill up with fans – especially with Panathinaikos fans in the left corner. I read “Gate 13” everywhere on flags, people taking their shirts of, police standing on the court watching the fans. I am pretty used to fans like that since I watch soccer – well at least that is what I thought.

If you have seen the Panathinaikos “ultras” you might get scared. It is loud and they can get pretty angry. (Philadelphia Eagles fans are mild and nice compared to these fans) They also have songs they sing all the time and one of them is called “schizophrenia” – I guess this word is known all over the world and doesn’t need any explanation – but you might want to hear the song, so here you go:

As I watched the first Euroleague game of Panathinakos against Lottomatica, which Rome almost won – if Hawkins would know how to make an inbound pass – or at least if Roko Ukic would not have traveled, I heard Panathinaikos official song. Well it was hard to hear because the fans where so loud even on TV that I couldn’t hear it but I think you might want to hear that to. Here is Panathinaikos official anthem.

Compared to the schizofrenia song – this is pretty different, isn’t it?I did not want to mess with the Gate 13 fans but it might be funny to put that song to the video instead of the schizophrenia song..
