Goodbye, Euphony Bree

July 16, 2008

We’ve already talked about the problems of Euphony Bree and their possible demise in the Belgian Ethias League. The licensing committee has now given their final decision: NO license for Bree.

After receiving the license to play under certain conditions for the following season, the Belgian team could not fulfill these and will not compete in the 2008/09 Ethias League. The Limburg region club could not guarantee €750.000 in its bank account by the deadline date.

The committee ruled that the team does not have the necessary (financial) stability to last the entire 2008/09 season. Even if the team lands the sponsorship contracts that would provide the necessary funds, these moneys have not yet arrived in the accounts and the license cannot be given, according to league rules.

Bree can go into cassation at the Belgian Abritragecomité of Sports to challenge this ruling, but the chances are slim for a team that has been struggling financially over the past two years and which could never establish a solid infrastructure. We’ll see if Bree will use the opportunity to appeal; five workdays are granted for this step.
