Happy Birthday Martin

September 26, 2007

Today, the former Estonian NBA player Martin Müürsepp celebrates his 33rd birthday. The 2m08 forward from Tallinn is actually playing for the Melbourne Tigers in the Australian Basketball League. His season down under will start on the 28th with a game against the Adelaide 36ers.

Müürsepp has been drafted at the 25th place in the first round in the best NBA Draft of all time according to SLAM Magazine in 1996 which produced 10 NBA All-Stars and 13 NBA Championships until today. Behind him, you could find regular NBA players like Malik Rose or Shandon Anderson or see an All-Star in the person of Ben Wallace going undrafted. But you could also see a guy called Roy Rogers drafted in front of him. Müürsepp was one of the first big men that was also hitting three point shots and can be considered as one of the predecessors of that playing style in the NBA. He has played all over Europe after his 83 game NBA career.

I have found this clip on youtube, that was only uploaded three hours ago, so maybe there are some other people out there that like Martin as a player. You can see him in his earlier days but also playing for AEK Athens in the Greek league. To get to Australia for his new team, Müürsepp had a week long stay in Hong Kong because of visa problems. This information comes from a nice article in the Australian Newspaper The Age that also reveals that the contact between Müürsepp and his new team has been made by former NBA player and teammate Chris Anstey.

By the way, as my friend Lauri told me, Estonia is the only country in Europe (together with Lithuania) where Basketball is the number One sport.
