Highlights: USA and Australia book their places in FIBA U17 final

August 16, 2014

The FIBA Under 17 World Championship for men final is a re-match of the 2012 decider as the United States take on Australia. The USA were pushed hard for half the game by Serbia in Friday’s first semi-final but Diamand Stone (12 points, 8 rebounds) and Josh Jackson (8 points, 11 rebounds) kept their bid for a three-peat on track as they eventually ran out 89-68 winners.

The second semi-final was a thriller as Australia came back from the dead to knock off Spain. Trailing by as much as 22 points at one stage, the Boomers started to rally in the second quarter to cut Spain’s lead to 11 at the half before eventually forcing overtime. Isaac Humphries came up big for Australia with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 blocks, as they eventually booked their place in the final on an 80-74 scoreline.

The final, at 19.00 CET, will see Australia look to avenge their defeat in the 2012 final where the USA beat an Aussie team that featured Dante Exum 95-62 for gold.
