Is Ricky Rubio already the ULEB Cup MVP?

March 11, 2008

I had the chance to see the end of the 2nd half of today’s ULEB Cup Game between DKV Joventut Badalona in Moscow against Khimki. While we all know already about Ricky’s qualities, this game was once again a great showing of his abilities.

Known already for his defensive qualities, he showed an amazing scoring run at the end of the third quarter and the beginning of the fourth. It was him alone that made the break with some huge drives and shots. It was amazing to see how this kid used the small spaces to drive and to finish close to the rim. Ok, for our Spanish readers, this might not be a surprise, but for somebody who does not see Ricky’s tricks every weekend, it is amazing.

When we come to defense of course, Ricky is the best player in the ULEB Cup for real. I mean, he is present everywhere. Joventut was playing some kind of old fashioned 1-3-1 zone, but with Ricky on the top, this is a deadly weapon. First of all, with his amazing stealing talent, he is constant treat for the two guards that try to bring the ball to the other side. Of course, the Khimki guys were not going for a dribble to switch sides but always tried to pass the ball over Ricky: difficult task. But when the ball came somewhere down low, Ricky was running around like a fool and going for some huge interceptions on double teams. I mean, even if he is only 17 years old, he should be known also in deepest parts of Russia. You have to be aware and take care of the ball when Ricky is in town.

So is he already a candidate for the MVP? In my opinion yes. If Joventut goes for the trophy, and they are my favorites on my Bracket Boss Predicition, he will be a clear cut candidate. And for all the Fans, here is just another beauty of the Spanish jewel (watch No2 of this weeks Top 5 plays from the ACB).
