It's Barcelona, not Minnesota, for Rubio

September 1, 2009

Sorry Minnesota (and the NBA) in general: You’ll just have to wait until 2011 for the most electrifying point guard to enter the big league since … Magic Johnson, maybe?

DKV Joventut has reportedly agreed to sell Rubio’s contract to FC Barcelona, thereby immediately boosting that team’s chances for Euroleague glory. The contract, as has often been speculated, Rubio will be able to opt out of the European contract before the 2011-12 season.

    The NBA will be fine with John Wall joining it in 2010. But still it would have been nice for him to come over. The buyout was just way too high, and even with creative financing (transfer games, local sponsors, an additional 500k buyout for Henk Norel, etc.) the Wolves couldn’t get it done and Rubio did what was best for his financial situation.

    I like it, we get to see the best euroleague term I can think of in recent years when it comes to talent. We get a stacked Panathinaikos, Olympiacos from Greece against a redone Real Madrid with Messina and a Barcelona team that seems improved or the same after already being a semifinalist in the Final4 last year. This absolutely rocks, if you ask me. Now if they could only improve the euroleague.tv stuff and the commentary to be on par with the games we’ll be seeing I could imagine going into total bum-mode watching this stuff. Add to that that the spurs will be back this year and the only thing I need to be absolutely happy basketball-wise would be that someone beats Spain in the euros in a great upset. But I guess you can’t have it all…

    @Teo:
    I totally agree to what you say!

    This 4 teams (Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, Real and Barca) will definetly rock the euroleague!
    CSKA won’t play a big role this season.
    Perhaps Montepaschi will be also in good shape.
